BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a strong performance by No. 5/11 Indiana swimming and diving that saw nine NCAA B cut times, 15 NCAA Zone Qualifying scores and a pair of wins over No. 24/16 Northwestern, four Hoosiers earned Big Ten weekly awards via the conference office's announcement on Wednesday (Oct. 20).
Men's swimmer Brendan Burns and women's diver Anne Fowler each earned their second-career conference performer of the week awards, while a pair of freshmen, men's diver Carson Tyler and female swimmer Brearna Crawford, were honored for the first time.
Men's Swimmer of the Week: Brendan Burns
Junior Brendan Burns earned three wins, two NCAA B cut qualifying times and a pool record on Saturday.
Burns started his day contributing a 20-second split in the third leg of Indiana's first-place 200 Medley team to earn the IU men's team's first 11 points of the day.
In the men's 200-Yard Butterfly, Burns touched the wall in 1:43.18 to set a new standard for Norris Aquatics Center. The mark also qualified Burns for postseason and stands as the fourth best 200 fly time in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten this season.
Burns' third win of the day came in the men's 200-Yard Backstroke, where he finished almost two seconds before the runner-up. His 1:45.33 is the 13th best time in the nation and No. 3 in the Big Ten.
To complete his stellar day, Burns raced the 100 fly in exhibition and finished second behind teammate Gabriel Fantoni. Burns' 47.06 earned him a second B cut qualifier.
Men's Freshman of the Week: Carson Tyler
Freshman diver Carson Tyler shined in his first-ever collegiate dual meet. Tyler finished first in the 3-Meter dive and third in the 1-Meter Dive, contributing 12 points to Indiana's win. The Moultrie, Georgia, native also tallied NCAA Zone Qualifying scores in both events.
Tyler's 408.00 score in the 3M set a pool record for Norris Aquatics Center.
The freshman's sparkling debut came a week after he won two golds and one silver medal at the UANA Pan American Diving Championships, where he helped Team USA win its first Pan American title since 2011.
Women's Diver of the Week: Anne Fowler
Anne Fowler claimed her first 1-meter dive victory of the season with a 327.20 score that ranks No. 3 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten.
Within a massive performance for the Indiana diving group that combined for 15 NCAA Zone Qualifying scores, Fowler produced two, in both the 1M and 3-Meter Dive, for the second time this season.
The Burke, Virginia, native also finished second in the 3M with a score of 341.90, contributing 13 points to the Indiana women's cause.
