COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Indiana men's soccer (12-4-1, 5-3-0 B1G) couldn't overcome two Maryland (12-3-1, 5-2-1 B1G) goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half, and fell, 2-0, to the home side Sunday (Oct. 31) afternoon at Ludwig Field.
With the result, and Penn State's win against Wisconsin, Indiana takes the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers will host the No. 6 seed next Sunday, November 7, on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
"Obviously, it's difficult losing a title opportunity," IU men's soccer coach Todd Yeagley said. "Credit to Maryland today, I thought they came out and played hard, and they have some gifted players and made plays. When we look back at some of the chances we created, we had plenty of good ones to find a goal or two. And yet I thought the overall performance, as a group and some individuals, could be at a higher tick. So, we'll regroup, get ready for next week's quarterfinal and put this one behind us."
KEY MOMENTS
• The Hoosiers had the first clear-cut chance five minutes in as Ben Yeagley intercepted a pass to start the counter. The ball eventually came to the edge of the box for the feet of Samuel Sarver, who led Tommy Mihalic inside the 18. Mihalic had space to shoot, but a Maryland defender just got a boot to his attempt.
• Victor Bezerra played a brilliant through ball to Sarver, sprinting away from his mark into a one-on-one with Terrapin keeper Niklas Neumann. UM's man did well to save, and Mihalic's effort from the deflection sailed high.
• Roman Celentano and the IU defense did well to keep Maryland off the board in the first half. In the 35th minute, Celentano made a diving save to his left to just get a glove on a shot by Ben Bender.
• IU nearly took a lead right before the half through another one-on-one opportunity with UM's Neumann. Maouloune Goumballe played in front to Herbert Endeley who dribbled around the keeper but had his effort saved by a recovering defender.
• Four minutes into the second period, Maryland opened the scoring as Ryan Blumberg's header tucked into the near post from a corner.
• Spencer Glass was called for a handball inside the box in the 54th minute. Celentano dove left and saved Ben Bender's penalty effort off his leg.
• Two minutes later, Maryland made it two, scoring both goals within eight minutes. Indiana couldn't clear in its own 18, and the ball fell within the box to Bender, who slid it past a recovering Celentano.
• IU had a few chances to get a late goal, the best coming in the 63rd minute off a Ben Yeagley volley that Neumann had to save.
NOTABLES
• After a 2-2-0 start, IU rallied to put up a 3-1-0 record in its final four conference matches.
• The Hoosiers dropped all three points in a Big Ten road match this season, falling to 3-1-0 in such contests.
• Indiana's shutout streak came to end at seven straight matches. It stands as the second-longest single-season clean sheet streak in program history. Until the 49th minute goal, IU had not conceded in 725 consecutive minutes of play.
• Roman Celentano was forced to make a career-high nine saves from 17 total shots, with one of those saves coming from a penalty kick.
