Indiana Places Five Top-Three Finishers at Mountaineer Invite

BOONE, N.C. – In its first invite competition since 2019, the Indiana Wrestling team grabbed five top-three finishes, as well as individual champ in redshirt sophomore D.J. Washington, to complete a successful afternoon at the Mountaineer Invite.
KEY MOMENTS
• Sophomore Jacob Moran (125) set the pace for the afternoon with a 14-4 major decision victory over Quinn Melofchik (Air Force)
• Junior Graham Rooks (149) picked up a 4-3 round of 16 victory over 2021 NCAA Qualifier Kody Kamara to advance to the quarterfinals.
• Washington (184) picked up a victory by fall just 1:19 into his opening match against Calvin Sund (Air Force).
• Junior Nick Willham (197) had a flare for the dramatic. He earned a takedown in sudden victory to grab a 5-3 win over Kaden Russell (Duke) to move into the semifinals.
• Graduate student Brock Hudkins (133) came up clutch late in the third period of his semifinal match to earn a spot in the finals with a last-second takedown to beat Julian Chlebove (Arizona State).
• After dropping his opening match, redshirt sophomore Matt Ortiz (165) bounced back nicely to win the consolation bracket and claim a 5th place finish.
• Moran, junior Cayden Rooks (141) and Willham won their final matches to claim 3rd place finishes.
• Washington finished a perfect day by pinning Jacob Thompson (Air Force) to claim the 184-lb crown.
NOTABLES
• IU had five finishers in the top three of their respective weight classes and two finish in 4th.
• Washington pinned all three of his opponents Sunday. On the season, he's a perfect 5-0 with five victories by fall.
• Cayden Rooks went 3-1 on the day to move to 5-1 on the season.
• Hudkins was forced to medically forfeit his final match, but remains 4-0 on the season in bouts he's wrestled in.
• Moran, Washington, Willham and Cayden Rooks are a combined 16-3 so far this season.
