Indoor Track & Field Season Gets Underway With Hoosier Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Track & Field lifts the latch on the 2021-22 indoor season on Friday, December 10 at home by hosting the Hoosier Open. The first event is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. inside Gladstein Field House.

Participating Teams
Indiana welcomes eight other teams to the Hoosiers Open on Friday night. The Hoosiers will go toe-to-toe with Ball State, Cincinnati, Lindsey Wilson, Lipscomb, McKendree, Miami (OH), Ohio, and Saint Louis.
Indiana Schedule of Events
Women's track schedule of events – 60m hurdle trials, 60m trials, mile, 400m, 500m, 1000m, 200m, 300m, 3000m, and 4x400m relay.
Women field schedule of events – Weight throw, shot put, long jump, pole vault, and high jump.
Men's track schedule of events – 60m hurdle trials, 60m trials, mile, 400m, 500m, 1000m, 5000m, 3000m, and 4x400m relay.
Men's field schedule of events – Long jump, triple jump, pole vault, and high jump.

Recapping the 2021 Season
During the indoor season, Rikkoi Brathwaite won his first career Big Ten Individual title as he matched the Big Ten record time of 6.55 in the 60m. He went on to place third at the national meet. Maddy Pollard (Shot Put), Ben Veatch (5000m) and the Men's DMR Squad all earned All-American First Team honors while Cooper Williams (800m) and Nathan Stone (Pole Vault) was a second team All-American selection. Stone (Pole Vault), Veatch (3000m & 5000m), and Williams 600m) were all crowned champions at conference championships.
Turning to outdoor, Indiana saw eight individuals qualify for the national meet. Among the qualifiers were Nathan Stone and Anna Watson who both earned All-American Second Team status after placing 13th and 12th place, respectively. Maddy Pollard was also tabbed as an All-American with her ninth place finish in the shot put. Parker Raymond represented Indiana in the 800m while Ben Veatch ran the 5000m. Stone and Veatch were crowned champions at the Big Ten meet in their respective while Mahogany Jenkins had a breakout performance in the triple jump taking the bronze medal with a personal best mark of 12.66m.
Returning to IU
On the men's roster, the Hoosiers return six that competed at the indoor national championships in the spring of 2021. Rikkoi Brathwaite earned bronze in the 60m to highlight the weekend. During the outdoor season, Indiana saw 10 returners compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. Three went on to represent the Cream & Crimson at NCAA National Championships, Parker Raymond (800m), Nathan Stone (Pole Vault, and Ben Veatch (5000m).
The Hoosiers return 13 women who saw action at the NCAA East Prelims, including Maddy Pollard who represented Indiana at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA National Championships. Anna Watson made an appearance at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the pole vault.

There were 26 fresh faces added to the roster in the offseason, including three transfers on the men's side.
Kenny Benton is a transfer from Tennessee Wesleyan who was a 2021 Appalachian Athletic Conference outdoor champion in the 100m (10.65), 200m (21.41), 400m (47.40). During the indoor season he won the 60m (6.85), 200m (21-69.), and 400m (49.18). He has also seen action at the NAIA national meet in various events. Antonio Laidler is also a sprinter who comes to IU from Quincy and has competed at the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships. He took seventh in the 60m with a time of 6.89. Lastly, the pole vault squad was able to snag Ryan Lipe who is a transfer from Alabama. He finished as a bronze medalist at the SEC Championships two indoor seasons in row in 2020 and 2021. During the outdoor 2021 SEC Championships, he cleared a height of 5.55m (18' 2.5") to take the runner-up spot.
