
Indiana Softball Opens the 2021 Campaign in Leesburg, Fla.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 2021 Indiana Softball season kicks off this weekend in Leesburg, Fla.
The Hoosiers will face three Big Ten foes for a trio of doubleheaders to open the first weekend of action. First, they square off against Nebraska on Friday Feb. 26. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET and 12:30 p.m. ET. Then, Indiana will return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 27 to play a pair versus Wisconsin. Game one is set for 4:15 p.m. ET followed by game two at 6:45 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers will close it out with the Minnesota Gophers at 3:30 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 28.
Checking Out The Competition
Nebraska: Indiana will play two games against Nebraska on day one of 2021 campaign. The Huskers are coming off a 9-14 record in the 2020 season. The Huskers are led by Head Coach Rhonda Revelle who enters her 29th as the leader of the Nebraska Softball program. Their veteran roster is comprised of seven seniors, five juniors, three sophomores, and nine freshmen. Tristen Edwards is their lead returning bat after posting a .434 average on 33 hits with 22 RBI and 11 home runs. Edwards was named a Softball America All-American in 2020. She was also added to the USA Softball Player of Year Top 50 Watchlist in 2020 and 2021. Olivia Ferrell leads the Huskers in the circle with a 4.14 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched.
Wisconsin: The Badgers posted a 14-10 record in 2020 with Head Coach Yvette Healy who enters her 11th season at the helm of the Badgers squad. Jolie Fish is their leading returner with a 3.02 average on 16 hits and had 14 RBI. In the circle for Wisconsin, Haley Hestekin pitched a 1.94 ERA with 28 strikeouts through 57.2 innings pitched in the shortened 2020 season. As a team, the Badgers hit .241 with 146 hits and 29 homeruns.
Minnesota: Indiana's final opponent of opening weekend are the Minnesota Golden Gophers who are led by first-year Head Coach Piper Ritter. Ritter spent the previous 13 seasons as the pitching coach for the Golden Gophers. On the bats, Natalie Denhartog is their leading returner posting a .429 batting average on 33 hits, notching 28 RBI and seven home runs. Entering the circle for Minnesota, Autumn Pease paced a 2.12 ERA in 2020 through 59.1 and had 62 strikeouts.
Returning In 2021
After a shortened 2020 season, the Hoosiers return all 10 starters from last year's roster:
• Outfielders Gabbi Jenkins (.413, 26 hits, 11 runs, 12 SB in 2020), Taylor Lambert (.289, 52 hits, 36 runs, 22 SB in 2020) and Tatum Hayes (.154, 6 runs, and 2 hits in 2020)
• Infielders Katie Lacefield (.119, 47 hits, 33 RBI in 2019) and Grayson Radcliffe (.305, 18 hits, 11 runs, 4 HR in 2020)
• Pitcher Emily Goodin leads the way in the circle for the Hoosiers (1.76 ERA, 111 K, 107.2 IP in 2020).
• Catcher/Designated Players Bella Norton returns to her role behind the dish (.300, 15 hits, 4 RBI in 2020)
• IU brings back their top seven hitters from last season in terms of average, led by Jenkins, Lambert, and Davis. Jenkins is the leading returner from last season in batting average at .413 followed by Lambert (.345) and Davis (.328).
New To The Hoosiers
Indiana has six newcomers to the team, five freshmen and one graduate transfer.
• Graduate student Micah Schroder joins the Hoosiers from Dartmouth where she played first base. At Dartmouth, Schroeder played in 120 games and started in 110 of those games. She had a batting average of .365 which included 120 hits and 15 home runs
• The freshmen class includes pitchers Amber Linton and Macy Montgomery, catcher Grace Lorsung, infielder Brooke Benson, and outfielder Aaliyah Andrews.
What's Ahead in 2021
The Hoosiers will have an all Big Ten Conference schedule and will return to Leesburg the weekend of Mar. 11 to Mar. 14, the Hoosiers will face Northwestern for three games and Rutgers for the contests.
The first homestand at Andy Mohr Field will commence the weekend of Mar. 26 when they host Michigan. The two teams will play one on Mar. 26, two on Mar. 27, and one of Mar. 28.
Iowa is due up next as the Hoosiers will head to Iowa City, Iowa to play four games from Friday, Apr. 2 through Sunday, Apr. 4. Indiana remains on the road the following weekend where they will take on in-state foe Purdue. The first contest is slated for Friday Apr. 9 followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 10. The series finale will be played on Sunday, Apr. 11.
The Hoosiers will return home to face the Ohio State Buckeyes Apr. 16 through Apr. 18 before embarking on a road trip to Illinois on Apr. 23 and wrapping on Apr. 25 to close out the month of April.
Indiana will have back-to-back home series when they welcome Michigan State and Penn State to town. The Hoosiers will face the Spartans Apr. 30 to May 1. The Nittany Lions will then make the trip to Bloomington for four. First game is set for Friday May 7, the two teams will play two on Saturday May 8 and one on Sunday May 9 to close out the home schedule.
The regular season ends for Indiana at Maryland the weekend of May 14 through May 16. They scheduled to play four game throughout the weekend.
