
Hoosiers Bounce Back And Take Two Games Against Rutgers

Game One: Indiana 11, Rutgers 3
KEY MOMENTS
• Rutgers started the ball game with a leadoff single to center field, but Taylor Lambert was able to retire the next batter with a catch in center. Goodin recorded her first strikeout of the afternoon to get the second out. Another flyout would end the frame.
• With one out, Gabbi Jenkins returned to the hit column in the first with a shallow single to right field. Jenkins turned on the jets to steal second and get in scoring position. Bella Norton kept the Hoosiers going by drawing a walk. Jenkins would then go on to take third after a wild pitch by the Scarlet Knights.
• Into pinch run for Norton in the first, Aaliyah Andrews stole second then advanced to third on an overthrow by Rutgers. Jenkins eyed home where she got caught in a pickle but was able to beat it out for the first run of the game. Hannah Davis singled through the left side to plate Andrews and give Indiana a 2-0 lead.
• Amber Linton entered the circle to start the second inning of work where the Scarlet Knights recorded a one out double to get something going. The next Rutgers batter would fly out before Linton recorded her first strikeout to end the threat.
• Brooke Benson led off the second with a hit-by-pitch before a single to right field put runners on the corners. Lambert advanced to second with a stolen base and Grayson Radcliffe hit a sacrifice fly to score Benson. With a 3-0 advantage, Lambert came home on a wild pitch to put the Hoosiers up 4-0.
• Rutgers got a run back in the third but the Hoosiers responded with back-to-back singles by Davis and Grace Lorsung and a fielding error put Annika Baez on first to load the bases. Brittany Ford cracked the first grand slam of the season to left field to add to the Indiana advantage.
• The Hoosiers tacked on another run from a Davis RBI single to put the score at 9-1 headed into the fourth.
• Leading off the fourth, Rutgers tallied its second run of the day after a home run that went past the center field wall, but three quick outs limited the damage.
• Lorsung launched her first career home run in the fourth as the Hoosiers were out to a 10-2 lead.
• Bases were loaded with no outs for the Scarlet Knights in the fifth as Macy Montgomery entered to pitch. After a hit-by-pitch brought a runner home, the Hoosiers were able to get out of the jam and maintain a 10-3 advantage.
• Heading to the sixth, Rutgers was able to get one on with two outs but was stranded at first to end the frame.
• Davis doubled to right field to get the bats going for the Hoosiers. After a Lorsung walk, Baez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Lambert hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Davis and win the game 11-3 due to the run rule.
NOTABLES
• Brittany Ford delivered the first grand slam of the season for the Hoosiers. This was also her first career home run.
• Freshman Grace Lorsung hit her first career home run with a solo shot to center. Lorsung ended the game with two hits, one run, and a RBI.
• Gabbi Jenkins recorded six stolen bases which is the most by an individual in a single game in school history. The previous record was the three by Tete Hart who stole three on Apr. 10, 2019 against Purdue. The six is also most in Big Ten history and ties for second most in NCAA history.
• Davis, Jenkins, Lambert, and Lorsung had a multi-hit game for Indiana.
• Davis recorded a team-high three hits which was a season high for the junior.
• Six different Hoosiers had a RBI, including Ford's team-leading four.
• Indiana had 10 stolen bases which is a program record in a single game. The previous record was nine during the Saint Francis game on Mar. 17 in 2019.
Game Two: Indiana 8, Rutgers 1
KEY MOMENTS
• Emily Goodin and company proved to be rock solid to start the contest with two straight innings where the Hoosiers sent the Rutgers batters down in order.
• It was a second and third inning where Indiana used the long ball to take an early 2-0 lead. Katie Lacefield launched a solo home run to right field in the second while Taylor Lambert followed up with another solo rocket to center field in the third frame.
• The Scarlet Knights started the third with a walk where the runner went on to steal second. In scoring position, the Rutgers batter singled through the left side to plate a run and cut the lead to 2-1.
• Lacefield drew a walk before Aaliyah Andrews saw her first career hit for the Hoosiers in the fourth. Andrews stole second just before Lambert hit a base clearing two-RBI single to center field. Jenkins knocked a triple to right center to score Lambert and took a 6-1 lead.
• Indiana retired the seven-straight Rutgers batters through three innings of play. Goodin recorded her fourth strikeout of the game in the fifth.
• Lacefield drew the walk to begin the sixth and put a Hoosier on the base paths. Andrews reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second to get in scoring position.
• Jenkins singled through the left side on her way to stealing second and then third to start the seventh. Davis reached on fielder's choice and Jenkins scored to make the score 7-1. In to pinch run for Bella Norton, Juvia Davis stole second after Davis stole third.
• Bases were loaded with two outs after Radcliffe drew the walk. Lacefield drew the next walk to plate Davis for Indiana's last run of the day.
• Down the final three outs for Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights attempted to rally with a strikeout by Amber Linton, a fielder's choice and fly out left a runner on as the Hoosiers got their second victory of the day.
NOTABLES
• Aaliyah Andrews recorded her first career hit with a single in the fourth inning.
• Gabbi Jenkins continued putting on the jets with a team-high tying two stolen bases. The senior tallied three hits, two runs, and a RBI.
• Taylor Lambert and Katie Lacefield knocked out their first home run of the season. Lambert ended the game with two hits, two runs, and three RBI. Lacefield had one hit, two runs, and two RBI.
• Seven different Hoosiers had hits in Saturday's night game against Rutgers.
• Two Indiana hitters tallied multi-hit games. Jenkins recorded a team-high three hits and Lacefield had two.
• Emily Goodin went six innings with seven strikeouts for the senior's fifth win of the 2021 season.
• Goodin and company retired the last 11 of 14 batters to end the game.
