
Benson Plays Hero In Extra Innings To Lift Hoosiers Over Rutgers

LEESBURG, Fla. – A walk-off double from freshman Brooke Benson in the 11th inning lifted Indiana Softball (7-5, 7-5 Big Ten) over Rutgers (2-10, 2-10 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon,6-5, to complete to three-game series sweep over the Scarlet Knights. Gabbi Jenkins came up with a clutch steal at home to tie the game through 10 innings.
KEY MOMENTS
• With one on, Emily Goodin finished the first inning strong with two straight strikeouts to strand the Rutgers runner on first.
• Following a hit-by-pitch for Jenkins in the bottom of the first, she picked up where she left off on Saturday night and stole second to get in scoring position. A RBI single by Hannah Davis plated Jenkins for the first run of the ball game.
• Pinch running for H. Davis, Juvia Davis stole second and third before Bella Norton knocked a sacrifice fly to left field that plated J. Davis. The Hoosiers took a 2-0 lead at the end of the frame.
• Rutgers tied the game in the fifth by loading the bases with one out. Norton came up with a clutch catch from Lacefield to get the second out and keep the game tied. A walk by Goodin brought another run across home late and the lead shifted 3-2 Scarlet Knights.
• Taylor Lambert beat out a single to third base to start the bottom half of the fifth. Lambert got in scoring position by stealing second. H. Davis reached first on a fielding error and Lambert advanced to third, putting runners on the corners. H. Davis stole second prior to Norton laying down a RBI bunt and was able to reach on a fielder's choice.
• With game tied up at 3-3, H. Davis scored on a wild pitch to put Hoosiers up 4-3 with just one inning remaining.
• The Scarlet Knights bats came alive with a two out double to left field. A throwing error tied the game at 4-4. Indiana and Rutgers headed to extras.
• Getting out of a pinch in the eighth, Annika Baez laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Macy Montgomery to third. Brooke Benson doubled to the third baseman which kept Montgomery on base, but two foul outs ended the inning.
• Rutgers pulled ahead 5-4 in the ninth, but Jenkins continued her clutch base stealing by taking the third base bag. Needing a run to extend the ball game with two outs, Jenkins made a dash for home plate and was called safe to tie the game at 5-5.
• The Hoosiers retired the side once again in the 11th and they were now down to their final three outs.
• Benson hit the walk-off double in the bottom of the frame to bring Grace Lorsung home for the Indiana victory, 5-4.
