SCOUTING THE BADGERS
The Badgers improved to 4-2-1 to start the season after defeating Northwestern, 1-0, on Thursday evening. Freshman Ali Fine scored her first career goal off a cross in the 76th minute for the gamewinner. Goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer recorded the only two saves in victory over the Wildcats and leads the Big Ten in shutouts (5). Bloomer now has 14 saves on the season.
Sophomores' Emma Jaskaniec and Claire Odmark leads the offense each scoring a pair. Jaskaniec scored back-to-back gamewinners against Michigan and Illinois this season.
Wisconsin holds a 15-10-3 advantage over Indiana. This is the first match-up between the Hoosiers and the Badgers since October 5, 2018. Indiana is looking for its first win against Wisconsin since September 25, 2016.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana women's soccer was scheduled to face the Michigan State Spartans on Wednesday, March 17, but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 related issues in the Spartans' program. The home game was rescheduled to March 31, for 12 p.m. at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Indiana Hoosiers fell to Illinois on Saturday, March 13 at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 1-0. Sophomore Avery Lockwood had the first look on the afternoon on target in the second minute, but the Illinois' goalkeeper Sami Sample was able to step in for the save. To start the second half, freshman Jen Blitchok looked to put the Hoosiers ahead with an on-target attempt in the 46th minute, but the ball was saved by Sample once again. A foul by the Hoosiers in the 55th minute led to a free kick where the Fighting Illini capitalized from it. Illinois' Eileen Murphy headed it deep into the far post off a cross from Aleah Treiterer for the lead. Indiana saw its best opportunity inside the box in the 69th and 70th minute from Lockwood and senior Melanie Forbes, but Sample's hands were too quick. The Hoosiers looked for the equalizer as they outshot the Fighting Illini 8-4 in the second half but couldn't take advantage as the pressure from the Illini defense was overbearing.
NEW HOOSIERS HAVE IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Indiana women's soccer welcomed six new freshmen to Hoosier Nation. Four freshmen have earned starts in the first five games of the season - Anna Aehling, Anna Bennett, Gabi Rennie and Jen Blitchok. Sofia Black and Zoe Tiger have also provided great minutes off the bench for the Hoosiers. Bennett and Aehling are the only two freshmen who have started in all five of IU's games this season. Bennett, Aehling earned their first career point after dishing out assists.
Freshman forward Jen Blitchok recorded her first points after netting a brace in Indiana's 3-2 victory over Maryland on March 7. She is the second Hoosier to earn a brace this season. Senior Melanie Forbes also scored a pair of goals against Iowa on Feb. 28.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Consistent with IU Athletics' ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of students, coaches, staff, spectators and the local community, women's soccer matches will be played without fans indefinitely. IU Athletics' decision is in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and is consistent with what has transpired on all Big Ten campuses.
