LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Indiana University men's and women's diving teams secured three more NCAA Auto-Qualifying marks on Tuesday afternoon at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
The Hoosiers will send the following divers to the 2021 NCAA Championships: Anne Fowler (1-meter, 3-meter), Tarrin Gilliland (1-meter, 3-meter, platform), Andrew Capobianco (1-meter, 3-meter, platform), and Cole VanDevender (1-meter, 3-meter, platform).
WOMEN'S PLATFORM
Freshman Tarrin Gilliland earned her second NCAA Auto-Qualifying place in as many days as she punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the platform event with a 10-dive score of 528.25. She finished third overall. The Midland, Texas, native showed great consistency, scoring 50-plus points on her last four dives of both the preliminary and final rounds.
Gilliland will compete in all three diving events at the NCAA Championships. Fellow freshman Anne Fowler will dive in both the 1-meter and 3-meter championships.
MEN'S 1-METER
Redshirt junior Andrew Capobianco was clinical all afternoon with his execution and posted the highest NCAA Auto-Qualification score for the second time in three days. He earned the top spot in the standings with a score of 738.25.
The defending NCAA 3-meter champion will compete at the 2021 NCAA Championships in all three diving events.
Junior Cole VanDevender claimed a spot in the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish and a score of 703.75. He was locked in for the final nine dives of the afternoon with all of them scoring over 53 points, including seven over 60 points. VanDevender's last four dives, including a gritty effort on a 107c, catapulted him up the standings to secure his spot at the national meet.
In addition, the Fishers, Ind., native will now be eligible to compete at the NCAA Championships on both the platform and 3-meter boards based on his 11th and 12th place finishes, respectively, earlier in the week.
Senior Mory Gould finished 11th overall with a score of 619.00. After advancing to the finals in 14th place, Gould surged in the first four dives to put himself in real contention to land in the auto-qualification range (top-7), however a tough fifth dive effectively ended his bid for an NCAA berth. He finished the afternoon with nine of his 12 dives scoring above 50 points.
Gould will next compete at the Olympic Trials.
