
No. 13 Indiana Wins at No. 16 San Jose State, 12-8

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The No. 13-ranked Indiana University water polo team earned a road win at No. 16 San Jose State, 12-8, on Saturday afternoon in San Jose, Calif.
With the victory, the Hoosiers improve to 9-12 on the season overall and to 1-8 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play. The Spartans fall to 1-12 on the year and to 0-9 in league action.
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana went wire-to-wire in the victory over San Jose State, storming out to a 5-2 lead after the first period.
• The Spartans were able to cut the lead to just two in the second quarter, but IU was able to weather the storm and take an 8-4 advantage to halftime.
• In the second half, SJSU was never able to get closer than three goals, as the Hoosiers went on to earn the road win, 12-8.
• Junior Tina Doherty was nearly unstoppable for the Hoosiers, scoring a game-high five goals to go with an assist and two steals. Classmate Izzy Mandema had a pair of goals as well for IU.
• Goalkeeper Mary Askew made 10 saves in the victory, scored a goal and also tallied a game-high three steals.
NOTABLES
• The win over No. 16 San Jose State was the best for the Hoosiers since taking down No. 9 UC Davis on Feb. 8, 2020 at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
• Also scoring goals for the Hoosiers in the victory were Zoe Crouch, Lanna Debow, Kiki Mein and Sophie Wazzan.
• Tallying assists for Indiana were Crouch (2), Debow, Katherine Hawkins (2), Mein and Kallie White (2).
• Askew ranks ninth all-time with 302 career saves, nine behind Kate Toole in eighth.
• Mandema (54) is 10 goals shy of tying Candyce Schroeder in 10th place on the single-season goals list.
• Crouch (37) is eight assists shy of tying Deb Simone and Lauren Wyckoff in 10th place on the single-season assists list.
• Doherty (133) is 14 goals shy of tying Colleen McNaught for 10th place on the career goals list.
