BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana safety Jamar Johnson was selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round (164th pick overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson is the first IU safety drafted since Eric Smedley in 1996 (Buffalo, 7th round, 249th pick).
The Hoosiers have had 12 players selected since 2014 and at least one drafted in each of the last eight years, the program's longest streak since 1983-98.
Johnson earned 2020 first-team All-Big Ten honors, the first Indiana safety to earn first-team recognition since Eric Allen in 1996. He posted 43 tackles, 33 solo, one sack, 3.5 for loss, four interceptions (94 yards), one forced fumble, and four pass breakups in eight games.
The Sarasota, Fla., native tied for third in the conference and eighth nationally in INTs. Johnson shared first on the team in picks, finished second in stops and solos, and tied for third in PBUs.
He closed his career with 70 tackles, 53 solo, four sacks, eight for loss, seven interceptions, seven pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 31 games at safety and husky.
