#IUMS Advances to 16th National Title Match
CARY, N.C. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana men's soccer team (12-1-2) defeated No. 3 Pittsburgh (16-4-0) by a score of 1-0 in the 2020 NCAA College Cup semifinal match at Sahlen's Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday night.
KEY MOMENTS
• A misplayed ball deep in the Pitt backline led to the first chance of the match for Indiana in the sixth minute. Senior forward Thomas Warr collected the error and rifled a shot off the Panther defender and out for a Hoosier corner. The in-swinging corner was properly cleared by Pittsburgh.
• Pittsburgh sent in a dangerous cross in the 26th minute that was cleared by junior defender Nyk Sessock right in front of the goal mouth. The clearance nearly trickled into the Hoosier goal.
• The Panthers doubled down on chances in the final five minutes of the first frame. Sophomore midfielder Veljko Petkovic found space on a counterattack and raced down the middle of the pitch. His shot attempt from right at the 18-yard line sailed high of frame in the 41st minute. Petkovic also smashed a header on frame in the 44th minute that was saved by IU sophomore keeper Roman Celentano.
• Indiana provided the first real chance of the first half on a shot from 20 yards out by sophomore forward Victor Bezerra. The shot stayed on frame and was easily saved by graduate keeper Nico Campuzano.
• Bezerra again ripped a shot, this time in the 57th minute that narrowly missed goal.
• Video replay favored the Hoosiers in 58th minute when a potential Pitt goal was reviewed after the shot hammered off the crossbar. The center official confirmed the call on the field and no goal was rewarded.
• Pitt created a dangerous header attempt from sophomore defender Raphael Crivello in the 73rd minute. The attempt carried wide right of frame.
• Sophomore forward Herbert Endeley broke the scoreless tie in 79th minute with a laser from just inside the 18-yard line off the right wing. He took a pass from Sessock, added a couple touches and scorched the ball past the keeper in the upper right corner of goal.
NOTABLES
• With the result, Indiana will play in the 16th national title match in program history and third under head coach Todd Yeagley. Only one other program (Saint Louis; 13) has played in more than nine NCAA Championship games. Indiana has eight stars with the last championship trophy coming in 2012.
• Friday evening's victory means IU leads the series record 2-0-0 all-time against Pittsburgh with both meetings coming in the last two seasons.
• This was Celentano's 10th clean sheet of the season.
• The goal from Endeley was the second of this tournament run and fourth of the season for All-Big Ten second teamer.
