With the win, the Hoosiers improve to 20-9 on the season overall and in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes fall to 19-13 on the year and in league action.
KEY MOMENTS
• The two teams exchanged runs in the first inning. Iowa scored in the top half to take the early advantage, only to see IU tie the contest on an Iowa throwing error in the bottom of the frame.
• The Hoosiers put on an impressive display of producing a run in the third to take the lead. INF Paul Toetz led off the frame with a hustle double on what should have been a standard single to right field. OF Grant Richardson followed, laying down a perfect bunt single down the right field line to put runners on the corners.
• INF Cole Barr then plated Toetz with a run-scoring single to left field to put the Hoosiers ahead, 2-1.
• Indiana broke the game open with a five-run rally, all with two outs, in the fifth inning. Toetz started the scoring with a two-run single and was plated when Richardson tripled to right-center field.
• Barr capped the outburst with a monster, two-run homer over the left-center field fence to put the Hoosier lead at 7-2. Barr's blast was his team-leading sixth of the year.
• Iowa chipped away at the IU lead, scoring two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to cut the advantage to 8-5.
• The Hoosiers responded with another two-out rally. Hopkins hit yet another double, his third of the game, to get in to scoring position for INF James Espalin, who plated him with a clutch, RBI single.
• DH Ethan Vecrumba put the exclamation point on the weekend for the Hoosiers, clubbing a three-run, no-doubt home run to right field to make the lead 12-5 headed to the ninth inning. The homer was the first in Vecrumba's career.
• In the ninth, the Hawkeyes scored one run, but the rally ended there as the Hoosiers earned the victory.
NOTABLES
• RHP Gabe Bierman (4-2) earned the win for the Hoosiers, pitching six innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits. The righty struck out nine Hawkeyes.
• Indiana has scored 10 or more runs in three of the team's last four games.
• The 16 hits are the second-most this season, just one shy of the 17 against Minnesota on April 25.
• LHP Braden Scott retired both of the batters he faced in the seventh inning.
• Prior to the game, Indiana honored OF Drew Ashley, INF Cole Barr, INF Jordan Fucci, C Collin Hopkins, INF Jeremy Houston, INF/RHP Grant Macciocchi, RHP Connor Manous, LHP Tommy Sommer, RHP Braden Scott, DH Tyler Van Pelt, RHP Matt Litwicki, C Jacob Southern, manager Mitch Robinson, manager Noah Gastineau and assistant director of baseball operations Hanna Chait for Senior Day.
