
Hoosiers Propel Team USA Relays to Finals

TOKYO – Two former Hoosier All-Americans helped Team USA relays advance to the finals on Friday morning during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Through seven days in the pool, the Hoosiers have collected eight total medals (2G, 4S, 2B). As a University, IU athletes have produced 112 total medals – 57 gold, 21 silver, and 34 bronze.
WOMEN'S 400m MEDLEY RELAY
Four-time Olympic medalist Lilly King was dominant in her breaststroke leg of the women's 400m Medley Relay for Team USA in the preliminary heats. She split a 1:05.5 to push the American lead to nearly 1.5 seconds over Sweden in the second heat. Canada was able to make a late push to surpass the US, but Team USA qualified second overall for the final with a time of 3:55.18.
MEN'S 400m MEDLEY RELAY
Blake Pieroni and the American 400m Medley Relay team survived a scare in the preliminary heats by finishing seventh overall out of the first heat to advance to the finals on Saturday night. The squad touched at 3:32.29 to keep the Olympic gold streak going. Team USA has won gold in every 400m Medley Relay it has contested since the introduction of the event for the Olympic Games Rome 1960.
Pieroni competed in the anchor freestyle leg and clocked a 48.2-second split.
MEN'S 1500M FREESTYLE
Rising junior Michael Brinegar took 17th out of the prelims in the 1500m Freestyle with a time of 15:04.67.
MEN'S 50M FREESTYLE
Egyptian Ali Khalafalla finished t-24th out of the preliminary heats of the men's 50m Freestyle with a time of 22.22 to close out his 2020 Olympics.
