No. 2 Indiana Opens at Notre Dame on Friday Night

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 2-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (0-0-0) are set to begin the 2021 season on the road against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (0-0-0). First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Aug. 27 at Alumni Stadium in Sound Bend.

SETTING THE SCENE
• IU returns to the pitch just 102 days removed from the National Championship match on May 17th, the shortest offseason in program history.
• Indiana enters the 2021 campaign off a 34th-straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and the 45th overall in the program's history.
• The Hoosiers were named the national No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. IU has earned a top-16 seed 16 times since the NCAA implemented the current seeding format in 2003 (18 seasons).
• IU advanced past St. Francis Brooklyn (3-1 PKs), No. 19 Marquette (2-1), and No. 6 Seton Hall (2-0) to advance to an NCAA record 21st College Cup.
• A brilliant goal from then sophomore Herbert Endeley in the late stages of the match against No. 3 Pittsburgh (1-0) propelled Indiana to the National Championship for the 17th time in program history, also an NCAA record. The Hoosier season ultimately ended in a gutting 1-0 (OT) loss to No. 10 Marshall.
• Last season, the Hoosiers won both the Big Ten regular season championship (17th time) and Big Ten Tournament championship (15th time) in the same season for the third time in as many years, marking the first tiple double since the 1996-99 seasons. The double is the 11th in program history, the rest of the Big Ten has accomplished the feat seven times.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana was selected as the Big Ten Conference preseason favorite in a poll voted on by the league's coaches. The result marks the second-straight season in which IU was picked unanimously to win the conference.
• Junior forward Victor Bezerra and junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano were each selected to the College Soccer News Preseason All-America First Team and the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI First Team, while redshirt senior defender Spencer Glass was tabbed to the second team of each publication.
• All three players were also named to the Big Ten Watch List prior to the beginning of the season.
• Freshman midfielder Tommy Mihalic was named to the TDS Preseason Freshman Best XI.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
• The Notre Dame Fighting Irish, led by fourth-year head coach Chad Riley, finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 8-9-0 (4-7-0 ACC) and a trip to the ACC Semifinals.
• Senior forward Jack Lynn led the Irish in goals (8), points (16), shots (44), shots on goal (18) and PK goals (3) on his way to being named All-ACC first team, United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team, and Academic All-America Third Team. He in the lone ND returner from the 2020-21 squad that scored more than one goal in the condensed, 17-game schedule.
• Sophomore goalie Bryan Dowd is the only Irish keeper that saw game action in the 2020-21 season. He played 315 minutes in four matches. The Willow Springs, Ill., native posted a record of 1-2-0 with four goals allowed (1.14 goals allowed per game) with 11 saves (.733 save percentage) and one shutout.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana carried a record of 20-1-1 from 1973-97, but the rivalry as tightened up since. The Hoosiers hold an edge 11-8-3 sin the 22 matches since. IU is undefeated (3-0-1) in the last four matchups between the two national powers and has not suffered a setback against the Fighting Irish since Oct. 4, 2016.
• In the last meeting, the two programs played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action on Sept. 17, 2019. ND struck first, scoring in the 40th minute but Indiana leveled the score on a 67th-minute goal from Herbert Endeley. The Hoosiers held statistical advantages over the Fighting Irish in shots (25-8) and corner kicks (13-9), while committing fewer fouls (17-4) in the contest.
BIG TEN TRIPLE DOUBLE
• For the third-straight season, Indiana claimed both the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles during the 2020-21 campaign, the longest streak in the conference since IU captured four-straight league doubles from 1996-99. No other program has achieved the feat in consecutive seasons.
• This marked IU's 11th regular season, tournament double in program history. The rest of the conference has seven combined doubles.
• The Hoosiers have won a conference-leading 17 regular season Big Ten regular season championships and 15 Big Ten Tournament crowns.
• Indiana has won the last six trophies handed out by the Big Ten (3 regular season, 3 tournament).
• Bezerra was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Tournament after scoring all five Hoosier goals in the tourney. Celentano claimed Big Ten Defensive Player of the Tournament after recording two cleansheets (one solo) and making two big saves in the PK shootout. Both, along with Munie, were named to the All-Tournament Team.
