
IU Athletics and IU Health Join Forces To Care for Student Athletes

New 10-year partnership will provide nearly 700 student-athletes with comprehensive healthcare by the state’s largest healthcare system
BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA – Today, Indiana University Athletics and Indiana University Health announced a new, 10-year agreement where IU Health will serve as the Official Healthcare and Sports Medicine Provider of IU Athletics. Indiana's largest and most comprehensive health system will bring its highly skilled, compassionate care to IU Athletics' nearly 700 student-athletes, supporting IU Athletics' commitment to deliver the very best healthcare services and support to its student-athletes.
"IU and IU Athletics have long enjoyed an important relationship with IU Health, which is the leading healthcare provider in the Hoosier state," said Scott Dolson, IU Intercollegiate Athletics, vice president and director. "We are pleased that our internal medical leadership team of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Andy Hipskind and Dr. Larry Rink will be united with IU Health's world-class medical team to offer our student-athletes access to the very best healthcare support available around the clock."
The majority of IU Health's physician workforce serve on the faculty of the IU School of Medicine. Under the comprehensive healthcare agreement, IU Health will provide IU Athletics' primary and specialty care services including:
"Providing the best care to student-athletes presents a set of particular challenges that our team of highly skilled physicians are uniquely qualified to handle," said Dr. Kevin Gebke, president, IU Health Community Medicine and chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the IU School of Medicine. "The student-athletes' access to IU Health's full spectrum of healthcare services ensures a holistic and personalized approach to caring for their individual needs both physically and mentally."
A dedicated Student-Athlete Care Coordinator provided by IU Health will ensure student-athletes will receive prompt and direct access for scheduling appointments, procedures, tests and imaging with IU Health physicians and at IU Health facilities.
The agreement, which went into effect July 1, 2021, and runs thru June 30, 2031, provides IU's student-athletes and the department with access to Indiana's largest and most comprehensive health system. With 16 hospitals across Indiana, primary care and specialty care offices, and allied services, IU Health provides access to the full spectrum of healthcare services for adults and children. One of Indiana's largest employers, IU Health has more than 34,000 team members.

- Primary care sports medicine.
- Orthopedic care with a dedicated Chief Orthopedic Officer who will work with a multi-disciplinary team of orthopedic specialists.
- Dedicated neurology staff to respond to urgent spine injury needs and to manage and administer IU Athletics' concussion management programs.
- A cardiologist who will serve as IU Athletics' primary cardiologist to provide oversight for cardiac testing and follow-up cardiac care.
- Sports psychology services to be provided in collaboration with the IU Athletics' Sports Psychology staff.
