
IUVB Opens 2021 Campaign at Top Dawg Challenge In Indianapolis

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Volleyball opens the 2021 slate with a trip to Indianapolis for the Top Dawg Challenge and will face UIC, Bowling Green, and host school Butler. The matches are set for August 27 & 28 inside Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Opening Serve
• IU head coach Steve Aird is entering his fourth season with Indiana. Aird was a four year member of Penn State men's volleyball (two-year captain) from 1997-2001. Aird coached at Penn State in 2007 and 2012-13 and was part of two national championship teams.
• The Hoosiers welcome seven newcomers to the roster for the 2021 season. Kenzie Daffinee, Camryn Haworth, Carly Mills, and Mady Saris join Indiana as freshman while Paula Cerame, Isa Lopez, and Kaley Rammelsberg come to the Hoosiers as transfers.
• Indiana welcomes back 10 letter winners to the 2021 roster. Grad Student Brooke Westbeld is the leading returner on the attack with 177 kills while junior Haley Armstrong led the squad in digs with 209. On defense sophomore Savannah Kjolhede put up 58 blocks to lead the Hoosiers.
All-Time Series
• The Hoosiers and UIC are tied at 5-5 in the all-time series. The last time the two teams met was during the 2014 where the Flames got the edge, 3-2.
• Indiana leads Bowling Green 4-2 in the series with the latest win coming on Sept. 15, 2014. The Hoosiers took the match at home 3-0.
• The Hoosiers own the all-time series 7-4 against Butler. The Bulldogs and Indiana last met on the campus of Indiana in 2014 where Butler won the match, 3-0.
Checking Out the Competition
• UIC: Justin Ingram will begin his fifth season in charge of the Flames. UIC was 14-3 in 2020-21 where they made it to the championship game of the Horizon League tournament before falling to Wright State in five sets. Returner, Paola Santiago led the squad through 64 sets. Santiago saw a team-high 230 kills and generated 186 digs.
• BOWLING GREEN: Danijela Tomic is the head coach of the defending MAC Conference champions and enters her 10th season when the 2021 campaign commences. The Falcons were 22-2 during the 2020-21 season and were led by Julia Walz who played 91 sets and recorded 435 digs.
• BUTLER: Sharon Clark enters her 22nd at the helm of the Butler Bulldogs. Clark is 336-287 as the head coach. The Bulldogs went 4-10 during the Spring 2021 season. One of their four wins came against No. 24 Marquette where they edge the Golden Eagles 3-2 inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. Melody Davidson is the top returner for Butler who played 54 sets last season with 140 kills and a team high eight solo blocks.
Looking Back
• Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 2020Indiana Volleyball season was moved to the spring of 2021 where they faced just Big Ten Conference opponents. The Hoosiers went 5-15 against conference foes and finished 11th in the conference.
Becoming a Hoosier
• Indiana welcomed three transfers during the offseason, Paula Cerame (Florida), Isa Lopez (La Salle), and Kaley Rammelsberg (High Point).
• Cerame hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico and played the last three seasons at Florida. While playing for the Gators, she appeared in 67 matches with 276 digs and 49 assists.
• Lopez comes to Indiana from La Salle. Lopez is from Richardson, Texas where she was a three-year letter winner at Ursuline Academy of Dallas.
• Rammelsburg spent the two seasons prior to 2021 at High Point where she was part of the 2020-21 Big South conference championship team and made the All-Big South First Team in 2019 and 2020. She was also named Big South Freshman of the Year. The Westerville, Ohio native played in 185 sets across 52 matches. She recorded 386 kills, 157 blocks, and 53 digs.
Returning In 2021
• The Hoosiers returns 10 letter winners in 2021. Haley Armstrong, Breana Edwards, Emily Fitzner, Morgan Geddes, Grae Gosnell, Savannah Kjolhede, Sophie Oliphant, Brooke Westbeld, Ashley Zulauf, and Kari Zumach return to the roster.
• Zumach makes her way back to the court for Indiana after not playing in the 2020 season due to injury. During her sophomore season, Zumach played 13 matches where she tallied 49 kills, 23 blocks, and 21 digs.
• Westbeld returns for her final season with the Hoosiers after leading the squad in assists with 376 and kills with 177 in 2020-21.
• Armstrong led the squad in digs with 209 during the 2020-21 campaign. She also tied the team high sets played with 65.
• Kjolhede leads the way for Indiana when it comes to blocks. She tallied 58 during her freshman season.

• The Big Ten Conference announced their preseason honors on Aug. 23. The Hoosiers were picked to finish tied for 13th among the Big Ten.
• Indiana averaged 2.1 blocks per set in 2021. They also averaged 10.8 kills per set.
