Indiana Defeats Central Michigan 3-2 in Season Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Indiana Field Hockey team (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) kicked off the 2021 regular season with a 3-2 victory over Central Michigan (0-1, 0-0 MAC) on Friday afternoon at Cristy Freese Field.
KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman midfielder Kira Curland opened the scoring for IU just 36 seconds into the season with a goal off a deflection from the Central Michigan goalkeeper.
• In the third minute, freshman midfielder Sofia Arrebola Garcia put a shot on net, but it was deflected away by the Chippewa keeper.
• Freshman forward Kayla Kiwak received the ball on a breakaway but her one-time attempt was knocked away late in the first period.
• Just two minutes into the second quarter, Central Michigan equalized on the man-advantage.
• Freshman midfielder Maggie Carter attempted to give IU the lead back in the 20th minute, but her shot was saved. The follow up from Arrebola Garcia went over the net.
• Arrebola Garcia continued her impressive debut by giving IU the lead heading into the break. Senior midfielder Jes McGivern recorded the assist on the goal.
• Senior forward Hailey Couch answered a Central Michigan equalizer by getting in front of the defense and scoring around the keeper to give IU the lead for good.
• IU held off Central Michigan in the final five minutes after Central Michigan pulled its keeper in search of a late equalizer.
NOTABLES
• Freshman goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge, freshman midfielder Yip van Wonderen, Curland and Arrebola Garcia all started the match in their first appearances for IU.
• Kiwak and Carter also made their first career appearances for the Hoosiers.
• Redshirt sophomore defender Sydney Keld, van Wonderen and Loveridge played the entire 60 minutes in the season opener.
• Curland and Arrebola Garcia tallied their first career goals. Couch's game winner was the 11th goal of her career.
• This was IU's first non-conference game since October 25, 2019. That match also ended in a 3-2 victory for the Hoosiers in Mt. Pleasant.
