Celentano Bags 17th Career Shutout
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (2-0-0) edged visiting Butler (0-1-1) by a final score of 1-0 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Tuesday night.
KEY MOMENTS
• Junior goalkeeper Roman Celentano was tested early in the match as the 2020 All-America second team selection was forced to make two brilliant saves in the opening five minutes of play. The defense tightened up and the Naperville, Ill., native was not called upon to make a stop the rest of the contest.
• Indiana was the first to the scoreboard after a flurry of shots from inside the 6-yard box ended in a goal from sophomore defender Joey Maher. The sequence began with a free kick from redshirt senior defender Spencer Glass. The cross found the head of Maher, who flicked on an attempt that hit the crossbar. Junior midfielder Brett Bebej gathered the rebound and attempted a point-blank shot, but the attempt was turned back by a Butler defender. Maher collected the loose ball and fired a shot past the BU keeper in the 29th minute.
• Butler nearly found the equalizer in the 67th minute when graduate defender Rhys Myers attempted a slow-rolling shot inside the box that was saved sophomore defender Lawson Redmon. The play was reviewed on the field, but the call on the field stood to keep IU's lead at 1-0.
• The Hoosiers narrowly missed out on doubling the one-goal advantage in the 77th minute when freshman Tommy Mihalic curled a shot into the upper left corner of frame. Butler senior keeper Gabriel Gjergji was up to the take and made an excellent one-handed save to keep the score at the game's final of 1-0.
NOTABLES
• The tally from Maher in the 29th minute was the first of his brief career at Indiana. The first four goals scored by IU this season have come from players that entered the season without a collegiate goal.
