Two Hoosiers Inside Top-10 Individual Standings

CHICAGO – The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team fell two spots in the standings heading into the final round of the 2021 Fighting Illini Invitational at the Olympia Fields Country Club on Saturday. IU is in fourth at 571 (283-288; +11) through 36 holes.

Sophomore Drew Salyers (t-sixth) and junior Noah Gillard (t-ninth) each rank inside the top-10 of the individual standings heading into the final round of play.

The No. 4-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (561; +1) lead the field over the No. 3-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (564; +4). The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys (568; +8) dropped to the third spot in the team standings to round out the field ahead of the Hoosiers.

• Gillard fired an even round of 70 to lead the Hoosiers. He is tied for ninth overall after 36 holes at 141 (71-70; +1). In the second round he carded birdies on No. 3 and No. 5.

• Salyers and sophomore Clay Merchent both shot 2-over 72 on Saturday. Both holed out birdies on No. 11 and No. 13, while Salyers added a pair on birdies on the front nine (No. 1 and No. 4).

• The reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week, Salyers, is tied for sixth through two rounds at 140 (68-72, E). Merchent is t-50th at 148 (76-72; +8).

• Senior Mitch Davis played a 4-over 74 round with birdies on No. 2 and No. 12. He is tied for 37th at 146 (72-74; +6).

• Fifth-year senior Ethan Shepherd was 8-over (78) on the day with a birdie on No. 13. He will enter the final round in a tie for 57th at 150 (72-78; +10).

• The Hoosiers remain ahead of seven schools ranked inside the top-25 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason Coaches' Poll: Pepperdine (1), Texas (5), Illinois (10), Florida State (12), Stanford (15), Florida (17), Arizona (22).
