BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With Idaho on deck this week, the Indiana football program spoke to the media. Below are quotes from coordinators Nick Sheridan and Charlton Warren, along with student-athletes Ryder Anderson, Charles Campbell, Stephen Carr, Cam Jones, and Michael Penix Jr.
Below is a partial transcript of the press conferences, while video of the full media session can be found on the right sidebar at IUHoosiers.com.
Nick Sheridan | Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
On how the offense preformed at Iowa…
NS: Not very good. It's our profession and our job is pretty evaluation friendly, and we didn't get enough yards or score enough points and we turned the ball over and gave them 17 points. We need to do better, and I need to coach better. Sometimes you look at it from a schematic standpoint and ask yourself the things you could have done to put your guys in better positions. Other times, execution of the play needs to be better and that's our job as coaches as well. You look at both of those. You look at is this play versus this defense are the guys are going against is it schematically sound. If everybody does their jobs, should the play have success and then you look at the execution of that. If either one of those fall short, the responsibility is on the coach. We are looking to improve on that this week and clearly we didn't do a good job on Saturday [at Iowa].
On the passing game…
NS: I just think that some of the fundamentals within the moment could be a little tighter, a little better. Some of those throws, Michael [Penix Jr.] is moving but there's fundamentals involved in that as well. That's the difference between big completions and incompletions or tipped passes: the ball location. Sometimes you can get away with some of those things in the course of the week against the scout team but when you play really good defenses you can't … I need to coach them better. I need to make sure that [Penix Jr.] has got a good base, he's got his feet underneath him and he's able to finish his throws and follow through. Even when there is some leakage or duress within the pocket, you've still got to be able to execute those plays. That's what Michael has done throughout his career and we expect him to do that moving forward and I know he feels the same way. I need to coach him better and put him in those situations. You're talking a foot, that's a difference between Ty (Fryfogle) on the sideline making a couple of catches and tipping off the fingertips. That's the difference between, in this conference and this sport, a 30-yard gain and a tipped interception. The margin for error is small and we knew that going into the game and in some of those instances I can coach them better.
Charlton Warren | Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
On Josh Sanguinetti…
CW: Josh played some last year, as well, when guys got hurt. He's had a good fall camp. He's a guy that is physical, very smart and he's a guy in that situation you can depend on to know what to do. Like all players, he's learning once you're thrown into the role where you're going from 10-15 plays a game to you're getting 50. I think he navigated that well. In fall camp, we do a lot of putting guys in back-up roles in with the ones and guys who are ones in with the twos so you buildmsome kind of comradery as a group, some kind of gel. Those things paid off in that situation because he's worked with Marcelino [McCrary-Ball] and Raheem [Layne], so they've had some work together throughout fall camp just in case something like this happens. I thought he stepped in and did a good job. He's not a guy who went in there and bust and you feel like there's going to be this huge drop off in the communication of what we do defensively, so he did a good job playing around 50 plays.
On if defense still has some growing pains…
CW: If you look at 158 yards rushing, one play is 56. You look at 156 yards passing, I don't think we didn't know what was going on. I think they executed some plays well and obviously when you give up a 56-yard run that sort of kills it. I will tell you that guys responded to that being down at that point 14-0 and came right back on the field and got a three-and-out. You saw some sacks, you saw some takeaways, so I don't know if there was a communication issue, but we didn't execute on one play that led to a 56-yard gain, which is 25 percent of their yardage on the day. I thought our guys did compete and show great effort. I thought that when we got down, they didn't change the way they operated. There was no quit and a lot of fight in those guys. I think first game, everybody is learning everybody from a defense standpoint, but I didn't feel like the game just got out of hand defensively and we couldn't stop them. There were a bunch of second-and-longs and I think they were 4-for-12 on third down, so some good things were done. We just didn't execute consistently throughout the game. which led to the plays.
Ryder Anderson | DL | Gr.+
On how to build defensively off last week…
RA: It's a bunch of little things that we have to clean up that's going to make us a really good defense. That's the encouraging part about it. The whole game really, both sides of the ball, is that as bad as the score showed? I still saw a lot of good things that we can build on to become a full-potential, a really good team.
On what led to Weston Kramer's game on Saturday…
RA: Literally, his hard work. He's one of the hardest workers on the team. He brings it every single day, no matter what you're doing. That's a guy I can fully count on to give me his all every single play. He practices that way, and it shows up in a game just like it did.
On why he believes this team is good…
RA: I don't just think it, I know we are a good team. It's just the work that we've put in. I feel like the bond we have; we really have a lot of faith in each other, we count on each other, and we love each other and that's not just a saying, it's real. Whenever we step on the field together, we are really going to battle for each other. Just seeing the work we've put in through the summer, throughout camp, and I know what potential lies there. I know what we did on Saturday wasn't that, so we go to work, we fix all the little problems and reach that potential. I know we are a really good team.
Charles Campbell | K | Jr.-R
On nerves for first game…
CC: My first kick out there was my 36-yard field goal. Obviously, I had a little bit of butterflies. It's like one of my first games that's been actually in front of a lot of people because last year we had no fans. It was really loud, but I used that nervous energy to the best of my ability and go out there and try to execute the way that I did.
On the special teams performance…
CC: We didn't perform our best. It was James Evans'first game as a college football player and he was shaken up after his first few punts. He had to get used to the atmosphere a little bit, and once he did he started to ball out. I really think that after the first half, we were on a big upswing. I hope we really carry that into the rest of the season.
On James Evans…
CC: I don't think James has ever been in a stadium that big. Maybe when I was in a stadium that big I'd go watch a football game when I was a kid, so I understood the atmosphere. But James, we kind of make fun of him a little bit in the days leading up to the game. We were like 'Buddy, you're in for it, you don't understand there's going to be 70 or 80 thousand people screaming at you when you punt.' He was like 'Oh man that will be fun' and I was like 'yeah not when they're saying bad things about you.' I think he handled himself great, and I'm really proud of how he did and I know he will keep doing better.
Stephen Carr | RB | Gr.+
On the contributions of the other running backs…
SC: Watching the film, going over reads because you can't judge everything just by being in the game or being on the sideline, you don't get the full view. Going back and watching everything and breaking everything down, I think everything was assignment [proficient]. Nothing is perfect, but I think everyone got their job done to the best of their abilities.
On if he made the most of his opportunities on Sunday…
SC: I would say I tried to. Me being the person I am, I always want more for myself, more for my team. I always feel like there's more we could do. There's more I could do even if there wasn't, if that makes sense. That's just kind of the dog in me.
Cam Jones | LB | Sr.
On what he saw on film after the Iowa game…
CJ: I think that after watching the film you can tell that we played with a lot of effort, but there were also a lot of mistakes. After watching the film, we are just going to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to get better as a team and go back to work and keep working.
On if having a veteran defense helps…
CJ: I think it does help, like you mentioned, we do have a lot of leaders on this team – a lot of older guys. I think that all the problems that we had [at Iowa], we will find solutions to those problems because we are an experienced group and we know what we have to do to get the job done.
On cleaning up penalties…
CJ: As a leader and as a team captain on the defense we emphasize no penalties. We always say 'the Hoosiers don't beat the Hoosiers' and a lot of times on Saturday we did beat ourselves. We've just got to encourage the guys and keep talking to the guys to not make those mistakes in big [situations] like that because it does hurt us. Those mistakes are something you don't do on purpose, and I know that. I know my team and I know my guys, and there won't be any penalties or mistakes like that again.
Michael Penix Jr. | QB | Jr.-R
On how he felt after watching the game film…
MP: After we watched the film, we saw what we expected. We just didn't execute what we needed to at the times we needed to. There were a lot of plays that were left out on the field, but I know we're going to make sure we get those corrected this week and we're just going to keep pushing forward.
On adjusting to the speed of the game coming off the injury…
MP: To be honest, not really because here we practice how we play. Obviously with the game, you're going against another team, and the nerves and everything are up and the adrenaline. We go out and practice full speed every day. We are trying to make it look like as much like a game as we can so that when we get in those situations, we are comfortable. I wouldn't say the game was moving fast, I just feel like it was small mistakes that we made in the game that we wish we could have back. We're going to make sure we fix those so we don't have those mistakes again.
On if he thought about running on his third interception…
MP: Initially I thought about running. I didn't realize how fast that guy was chasing me. It was a bad decision outside the pocket for me. I just have to know when the journey is over and throw the ball away. I learned from it and I'm going to continue to push forward. I know the team has my back and they continue to stay positive. We just stay together. That was the main thing coming out of Saturday, it showed our character, it showed that we stay together, and we didn't go pointing fingers after the game. We know we have a lot of stuff to work on and we're going to make sure to attack those things this week and going to get ready for Idaho and make sure to go out there and play our football.
