ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Behind a pair of strong individual performances, the Indiana Cross Country teams finished 3rd (Men) and 7th (Women) at the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on the campus of the University of Michigan.
Gabriel Sanchez had his biggest performance to date in his young career, earning the bronze medal and taking third place individually. He closed down Wisconsin's duo in the final 50 meters to come within two seconds of the winner with a time of 23:50.4
He is IU's highest individual finisher at the Big Ten XC Championships since 2016 (Jason Crist) and improved vastly on his 45th place finish last season.
The men scored 89 points to finish behind Wisconsin and Michigan in the team standings. Jake Gebhardt was 16th with Austin Haskett (21st), Camden Marshall (24th) and Dustin Horter (33rd) closing out the scoring for the Hoosiers.
On the women's side, Sarah Schmitt held pace with the lead pack for over 5000 meters before Ohio State's Addie Engel pulled away to win the individual title.
Schmitt finished 5th in 20:18.2 to grab First Team All-Big Ten Honors for the first time in her career. It was the fourth time she's earned All-Big Ten Honors for Cross Country in her career after being on the Second Team the previous three championship races.
Mariah Wehrle finished in 19th with Maddie Dalton (27th), Phoebe Bates (49th) and Katelyn Winton (72nd) rounding out the scoring for the women's team 7th Place finish.
This marked the first time since 2019 that IU has had an individual on both the men's and women's side in the top-5 at the Big Ten XC Championships.
The men finished in the top-3 at the Big Ten XC Championships for the 10th time under head coach Ron Helmer.
IU's postseason roster will head to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in two weeks' time to attempt to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships (Nov. 19).
