IU Ties Terps, Will Host Big Ten Tournament Match

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Just when it seemed everything would fall Indiana's way across the Big Ten men's soccer regular season championship landscape, the last domino didn't drop.
With the aid of an Ohio State 3-2 loss at Wisconsin, IU (8-3-6, 3-1-3 B1G) needed to win against Maryland (9-2-5, 4-0-4 B1G) to tie the Terrapins in points and share the Big Ten regular season title. After a goal from redshirt senior Ryan Wittenbrink in 25th minute, the Hoosiers held the Terps scoreless for 86 minutes.
But an 87th minute goal from UM junior forward Stefan Copetti spoiled the Hoosier hopes, and the Terrapins went home with the lone share of the championship. The match ended in a 1-1 draw on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
With the late goal, IU fell from the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament to the No. 4, still good enough to host in the opening round. IU will welcome No. 5-seeded Penn State in the Big Ten quarterfinal on Friday in Bloomington with time to be announced by the conference office. The Hoosiers handled the Nittany Lions in another home match during the regular season with a 4-2 victory on October 14.
KEY MOMENTS
• 8' – Junior defender Joey Maher put the Terps on their toes early with a headed attempt from a corner. At an awkward angle, Maher got his head around it and pushed it towards the near post with power. UM senior goalkeeper Niklas Neumann was planted in the right spot, however, and got his hands to it.
• 25' – Sophomore forward Samuel Sarver earned a free kick in a dangerous position. From about 25 yards out, Wittenbrink curled it into the top corner and gave IU the 1-0 advantage from an outstanding finish.
• 48' – Before the eventual goal, Maryland's best chance to equalize came just into the second half. Inside the box, Copetti got in front of his marker and took a first touch attempt across his body on a grounded cross. IU junior goalkeeper JT Harms had a quick reaction, though, and made a fantastic diving save to push the effort wide.
• 54' – Senior forward Herbert Endeley had a chance to make it two for IU with space just outside the 18-yard box, but he pushed his attempt wide.
• 87' – Redshirt sophomore Joshua Bolma's inswinger from about 30 yards out found the head of Copetti at the back post, and the shot fizzled in to tie the match.
NOTABLES
• Indiana is 6-1-3 at Bill Armstrong Stadium this season.
• Wittenbrink retook the team lead in scoring with his seventh goal of the season, his first from a free kick (not including penalties). The redshirt senior also leads the Hoosiers in points with 20.
• Sunday's result was the eighth draw in 19 matches between IU and Maryland. The Hoosiers still hold the all-time advantage with a 6-5-8 record against the Terps.
