Indiana Men’s Soccer Earns Ninth Straight National Seed

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The nation's longest active national seed streak grows.
Indiana men's soccer earned its ninth straight national seed as the No. 13-seeded program in the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Monday (Nov. 14). The 48-team tournament field was announced on the 2022 NCAA Division I men's soccer championship selection show.
IU returns to the competition for the 47th time in program history while making its 36th consecutive appearance. Of four Big Ten teams that earned bids into the national tournament, IU is the only national seed.
With the designation, Indiana receives a first-round bye and will host its second-round matchup, against the winner of Saint Louis and Memphis, on Sunday (Nov. 20) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff time is TBD.
The Hoosiers played one of the toughest regular season schedules in the country as its first six matches included four ranked opponents and four opponents that made the 2021 NCAA Tournament. IU embraced the challenge, going 4-3-1 against ranked foes. Of its four losses, three were to ranked teams, two came against RPI top-five teams and one in the Big Ten Tournament final.
IU was the only Big Ten program that competed for both the regular season and tournament titles on each of their final days. The Hoosiers were three minutes away from becoming regular season co-champions before an 87th-minute Maryland goal stole the conference crown. Then, IU beat No. 5 seed Penn State and No. 1 seed Maryland on the road to advance to the Big Ten Tournament final for a sixth straight season.
Indiana saw its number of ties rise to its highest mark since 2017, corresponding with a rise in ties around the Big Ten. The conference saw 10 of its 36 matches end in a draw as compared to just three a year ago.
The 2022 championship field consists of 48 teams with the tournament running from Nov. 17 through Dec. 12. The NCAA College Cup, consisting of the national semifinals and finals, will be held in Cary, North Carolina. Indiana has appeared in the College Cup 21 times, winning the national title on eight occasions.
