Three Hoosiers Set for NCAA Cross Country Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Cross Country teams will have three runners take part in the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Nov. 20) in Stillwater, Okla.
Following the selection of at-large teams to the meet, Gabriel Sanchez, Mariah Wehrle and Sarah Schmitt earned spots at the national meet based on their performances at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Each Hoosier was among the top four runners on a non-advancing team, allowing them to advance individually to Stillwater.
Sanchez will be making his debut at the NCAA Championships following a breakout season that saw him finish third in the Big Ten and 14th in the Great Lakes Region.
Werhle will also be a debutant at the NCAA Championships after pacing the Hoosiers at the Great Lakes Regional with a 16th place finish in 20:19.5. She was 19th at the Big Ten Championships.
The veteran, Schmitt, will make her third appearance at the NCAA Championships after racing in 2019 and 2021 spring season. The four-time All-Big Ten honoree was fifth at the Big Ten Championships and finished 19th at the Great Lakes Regional in 20:22.3.
Saturday's races will begin at 10:20 EST with the Women's 6K, followed by the Men's 10K at 11:10 EST.
This will be the final Cross Country Meet that Ron Helmer coaches in his illustrious career.
