Indiana Wrestling Heads East for Garden State Grapple

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– After some time off, the Hoosiers will be back in action for two duals on Sunday, Dec. 4 in the second annual Garden State Grapple.
Indiana will take on Drexel and Binghamton back-to-back.
GARDEN STATE GRAPPLE:
-The Grapple is being held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
-The prestigious event features a challenge of Big Ten Conference teams against EIWA teams where each participating squad gets to compete in two duals.
-This is Indiana's first time competing in the showcase. The Hoosiers will face Drexel at 2 p.m. and Binghamton at 4 p.m. that Sunday.
-Participating teams include Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Drexel, Binghamton, Penn and Princeton.
DREXEL AND BINGHAMTON:
-The Hoosiers' slate for Sunday marks two teams that Indiana has not faced much in their history and have not seen in some time.
-Indiana has only wrestled against Drexel one other time, with the Hoosiers winning that dual, 29-9, in Bloomington on Dec. 7, 2013.
-The Dragons have yet to compete in a dual thus far this season but finished in sixth place at the Tiger Style Invitational and seventh place at the Keystone Classic most recently.
-Drexel is building off of a 6-8 season a year ago where they had two NCAA qualifiers.
-Those same two qualifiers, Michael O'Malley and Evan Barczak, are leading the way for Drexel this season.
-Barczak is ranked No. 24 at 165 and is off to an 8-2 start this season. O'Malley is the No. 8 ranked grappler at 174 with a 1-0 start.
-O'Malley was an EIWA champion a season ago and earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Championships 174 bracket.
-All-time vs. Binghamton, Indiana is 1-1 vs. the Bearcats, losing the most recent matchup, 6-29, in 2017, but winning in 2000, 41-3.
-Binghamton is currently 1-3, as winners of their most recent dual over Buffalo, 22-9.
-Prior to that, they narrowly lost to ranked squads No. 18 North Dakota State, 18-13, and No. 11 Minnesota, 19-15.
-Last year, the Bearcats were 7-11 and had four NCAA qualifiers. Two of those qualifiers lead the team this year, Jacob Nolan and Louie Deprez.
-The duo provides their lineup some punch at the heavier weights with Nolan being ranked No. 25 at 184 and Deprez slotted at No. 7 at 197. The duo has a combined 7-1 on the year.
BLACK KNIGHT INVITE SUCCESS:
-Indiana's last time out on the mat saw great success with the team finishing in a tie for second at the Black Knight Invite, hosted by Army.
-The Hoosiers' 95 points tied with the hosts and were only behind Penn State who closed out with 110 points for the team title.
-Indiana's D.J. Washington won the 174 title by way of a 4-0 day.
BIG WIN OVER PRINCETON:
-In the team's home opener, the Hoosiers showed up big time against No. 23 Princeton.
-A 22-13 victory marked the program's first ranked win since defeating No. 24 Northwestern, 18-16 in January 2021.
-Indiana's Jacob Kaminski (285) sealed the win with a 3-1 decision victory over Travis Stefanik.
Indiana will take on Drexel and Binghamton back-to-back.
