Indiana Track and Field Opens Season with Hoosier Open
12/8/2022 10:30:00 AM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Track and Field will officially get its season underway on Friday afternoon (Dec. 9) as it hosts the Hoosier Open to kick off a seven-month campaign, lasting through the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
The Hoosiers will send entries into 16 events Friday on both the men's and women's sides. The beginning of the season will see athletes run in events such as the 300 meters, 500 meters and 1000 meters to prepare for their primary events down the road.
IU returns several conference champions from the indoor and outdoor seasons last year including Camden Marshall, Jayden Ulrich and Nathan Stone.
During the 2022 Cross Country season, IU saw breakout campaigns from Gabriel Sanchez and Mariah Wehrle, both of which qualified for the national meet, as well as consistent performances from veterans Austin Haskett, Jake Gebhardt, Sarah Schmitt and Maddie Dalton.
A number of transfer athletes will make their IU debuts at the Hoosier Open including Christopher Grant (60 meters), David Olowookere (400 meters), Robert Blue (Long Jump) and Serena Bolden (Long Jump). Noah Koch (Shot Put and Weight Throw) will compete unattached.
Several of IU's strong core of freshmen will begin their collegiate careers. 2022 IHSAA State Champions John Colquitt and Ray Brodie will debut in the 60-meter hurdles and 200 meters respectively. Alex Smith will open up in the Long Jump while also running the 60 meters.
All six of IU's pole vaulters will make their season debut at the Hoosier Open. Nearly every member of the jumps and throws group will open up in one of their respective events.
Fresh off the Cross Country season this fall, a strong contingent of distance runners will take to the 3000 meters including nine women and five men. A number of mid-distance runners will run either the 500 meters or 1000 meters.
The 60 meters through 500 meters will allow a strong portion of the sprints group to open their season including 2022 Big Ten finalist Antonio Laidler (60 meters).
The indoor season begins in December, lasting through the second weekend of March with the NCAA Indoor Championships in New Mexico.
This will be the final season of Ron Helmer's tenure as head coach as he sets to retire following the 2022-2023 campaign.
Friday's proceedings will begin at roughly 3:45 with the Women's Weight Throw and wrap up just after 9:00 PM with the 4x400 relays.
