BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The second Friday in December is reserved for the beginning of the Track and Field season in Bloomington.
The 2022-2023 campaign began with the Hoosier Open and the first taste of this year's athletes in the cream and crimson.
Following a successful cross country season, Camden Marshall continued his string of impressive performances on the track. He broke the school record in the 1000 meters, running a strong five laps to cross the line in 2:21.64.
His mark was the best collegiate time in the event this season and the best in IU history since transitioning to meters from yards.
A Big Ten Champion in the 800 meters last season, Marshall's sophomore campaign is off to an impressive start.
Alyssa Robinson rewrote the record book in the 300 meters, lowering her personal best and program record to 38.08. She now owns the two fastest times in school history since the event moved to meters.
Makayla Hunter opened the meet by recording a mark of 19.02m/62-5 in the weight throw for a new personal best and the No. 10 mark in school history.
A strong day in the throws was continued by Jayden Ulrich, Noah Koch and Sean Mockler. Ulrich put the shot 16.53m/54-2.75 on her fifth attempt of the evening.
That mark was the second best in the NCAA on the early season. All six of her throws were between 15.92m and 16.53m, a consistent season-opening line.
Koch, competing unattached for just the fall semester, recorded a mark of 20.31m/66-7.75 in the weight throw, quickly moving into No. 6 in program history in the event.
Mockler had two marks of 20+ meters including his opening heave of 20.01m/65-7.75 which is fifth best collegiately this year.
A balanced effort saw the Hoosiers take the top three spots in both the Men's and Women's Long Jump including winning efforts from Serena Bolden (6.09m/19-11.75) and Alexander Smith (7.39m/24-3).
Projected to be one of the strongest event groups for the Hoosiers this season, a core that includes Paola Fernandez-Sola, Robert Blue and Kynton Grays had a successful season opener.
Antonio Laidler (6.82) and John Colquitt (8.37) ensured victories for the Hoosiers in both the Men's 60 Meters and 60 Hurdles.
Colquitt, making his collegiate debut, won both his prelim and the final.
Three-time Big Ten Champion Nathan Stone opened his season by clearing 5.40m/17-8.5. He attempted three tries at 5.54m/18-2 for a personal best, but he narrowly missed on each opportunity.
Jessica Mercier moved into No. 8 in program history with her clearance at 3.99m/13-1 in the Women's Pole Vault.
Sarah Schmitt paced the opening of the 3000 meters before heading off the track and opening up the race to allow Jenna Barker and Maddie Dalton to shatter their personal bests.
Barker used a big kick on the final lap (33.21) to cross the line in 9:30.55, followed by Maddie Dalton at 9:35.58.
Jake Gebhardt used a final lap of 27.80 to break away from the pack and win the Men's 3000 Meters in 8:05.67.
Maddie Russin narrowly missed out on a spot in IU's Top-10 List, running the 1000 meters in 2:50.29 on Friday evening.
The Hoosiers return to action on January 13th and 14th for the Commodore Challenge.
