ON THE SIDELINES
IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks) back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points.
Wisconsin coach Greg Gard is in his seventh year in Madison.
DEFENSE LEADS THE HOOSIERS
IU is first in the Big Ten and sixth in country in field goal percentage defense (37.6%) and first in conference games only (39.8). The Hoosiers also lead the league in scoring defense (63.8) overall and in conference play (65.1). IU is second in the league in blocked shots per game (5.4). The Hoosiers 37.6% field goal defense mark would be the program's best in the last 23 seasons. The previous best was 38.8% in 1999-2000.
ALL-AMERICAN TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS
Junior/sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 17.5 points (7th in B1G), 8.3 rebounds (4th), shooting 56.9% from the floor (4th) and contributing 2.54 blocked shots (1st).
He set a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall record by scoring 43 points against Marshall, breaking the previous mark (42) set by Steve Alford against Michigan State.
He has had nine double-doubles this season and 31 in his career with IU posting a 23-8 record in those games. He notched four straight double-doubles for the first time in his career after he had 23 points and 12 boards at Nebraska.
Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,370 points as a Hoosier, rating 25th all-time in IU lore. Despite being limited to 11 minutes due to foul trouble against No. 4/4 Purdue, he defended a game-winning shot attempt and made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to extend the IU lead.
He had 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block at Michigan State.
IT'S RACE, NOT TRAYCE
Redshirt Sr./Jr. Race Thompson has averaged a team-best 15.2 points and 8.8 rebounds in the last five games. He is ranked ninth in the Big Ten in rebounding (7.8).
He is coming off his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds at Michigan State. During this recent stretch, he had a season-high 18 points against Penn State and Maryland and added his fourth double-double of the season when he grabbed 12 boards against the Terrapins.
He is second on the team averaging 11.7 points and shooting 54.4% from the field with 18 blocked shots. He leads the team with 27 steals.
ODDS AND TRENDS
So./Fr. Trey Galloway has started the last two games and is averaging 6.7 points in his last 10 outings. He tied career-highs in minutes (37), points (13) and rebounds (5) at Northwestern.
Freshman Tamar Bates matched his season-high when he scored 13 points off the bench at Michigan State. He also had two assists and a steal.
The Hoosiers have led at halftime in 11-of-14 Big Ten games.
The Hoosiers 10-of-13 shooting (76.9%) from long range against Penn State was their third best shooting effort from distance since 1996-97 (USF, 1998 and Kent State, 2002).
In the last 12 games, IU has dropped its turnovers almost six per game at 9.7 per contest.
