MADISON, Wis. – No. 15-ranked Indiana women's swimming and diving remains in third after earning three medals during the third day of competition at the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday (Feb. 18) inside Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
Freshmen swimmers Anna Peplowski and Kacey McKenna both reached the podium. Peplowski took silver in the 200 Freestyle after swimming a 1:43.92, just .19 seconds out of first place. McKenna beat her seed in the 100 Back to take bronze with a season-best 51.93.
Sophomore Tarrin Gilliland represented diving on the podium via a bronze-medal performance in the 3-meter dive. Gilliland earned 60-plus points on three of her dives and captured career-best 369.40. Sophomore teammate Anne Fowler finished fifth in the event with a 352.60.
"We had an up and down day with a couple of divers on the bubble to move into the next final," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "Obviously, Tarrin and Anne had a great day getting into another A final and battling for those top spots. I'm proud of the whole team, and we're looking forward to carrying on into tomorrow."
Indiana will try to climb up the leaderboard one last time in the final day of competition Saturday (Feb. 19).
"I thought we had a really good preliminary, but then we just had some unfortunate things happen after that," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "We lost some valuable ground, and we find ourselves in third. We're 28 points out of second, but Ohio State did a great job putting themselves in a good position for tomorrow.
"I'm proud of the girls. We finished the 100 Backstroke on a high note with Kacey McKenna going 51.00 for the first time, but we're going to have to step back up and have a great prelims and close the meet out on the highest note possible."
