CLEMSON, S.C. – An early lead for the Indiana baseball program was whittled away by Clemson on Saturday (Feb. 19) afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers erased a 4-0 deficit on the way to a 19-4 series-clinching victory.
In his first start as a Hoosier, redshirt-junior Jack Perkins threw a career-high 3 2/3 innings and struck out a career-best eight batters in a no decision. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits and walked two batters.
Offensively, graduate student Tyler Doanes and redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis each hit their first home run in a Hoosier uniform. For Doanes, it was his first hit in the cream and crimson and his first home run since May 11, 2019 – then at West Virginia. He added an RBI single in the second inning for his 24th career multi-RBI game.
Freshmen Carter Mathison and Brock Tibbitts collected their first collegiate hits in back-to-back at-bats. Mathison started the second inning with a double and Tibbitts traded places his classmate and plated his first career RBI.
For Clemson, the 19 runs came via 13 hits, 16 walks and six hit-by-pitch. In all, 15 Tigers reached base safely in the game. After the CU starting pitching was solid on night one, it was the bullpen with 7 1/3 scoreless innings of work in the series finale.
