Hoosiers Earn Second-Straight Title
HAMMOCK BEACH, Fla. – The Indiana men's golf defeated both Purdue (3-2) and Michigan State (3-2) on the final day of competition to take the overall team title at the Big Ten Match Play Championships on the Ocean Golf Course on Saturday.
The team title is the third for the Hoosiers since the debut of the event in 2009. Indiana won the inaugural event in '09 and also took home the team crown in 2021, giving the Hoosier back-to-back championships.
The Hoosiers made a late comeback to overtake the top-seeded Purdue Boilermakers in the morning match, winning by a tally of 3-2. IU trailed for most of the morning but rallied back late to down their in-state rivals. Senior Mitch Davis and junior Noah Gillard both won their individual matchups, while sophomore Drew Salyers and fifth-year senior Ethan Shepherd both earned ties through 18 holes.
In dramatic fashion, IU toppled the Michigan State Spartans by a score of 3-2 in the championship match. Davis, who went 3-0 on the weekend, was tied for the final four holes with his opponent before pulling out the 1UP victory to secure the team title. Sophomore Clay Merchent took a 2&1 decision for his first individual victory of the weekend, while Gillard posted his second win of the day with a 3&2 result.

FROM THE MAYER
"I thought the Purdue match took a lot of energy out of us," head coach Mike Mayer said. "They are a really good team, but it is good to beat them. We are 3-0 against them this season and that is incredible given their top-25 ranking.
"We had a slow start against a really good Michigan State team," added Mayer. "We were very resilient down the stretch and were able to pull it out.
"Today was a tough day. Tough winds and temperatures about 20-25 degrees colder than yesterday. But we battled and had the right guy in the right moment in Mitch Davis. It came down to the last hole and he sank a 10-foot putt for the win."
UP NEXT
The Hoosiers will head to the Bahamas for the Albany Collegiate Invitational hosted by Auburn. The three-day event will begin on Feb. 14 from the Albany Championship Golf Course.
