Perkins strikeouts out six in the start, Pyne drives in RBI for third straight game
TROY, Ala. – The game-tying run stood on second base with two outs in the ninth inning, but the Hoosiers couldn't push the equalizer across on an overcast day at Riddle-Pace Field, as the Indiana baseball program dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel to Troy in the series opener on Friday (March 11).
The two teams combined for just 10 hits, as Indiana (6-7) was held to one run on five singles and six walks. Troy (9-5) got five hits and worked three walks, two of which came in to score. The Trojans put up their two runs in the sixth inning, while IU made it interesting with a run in the ninth and two on base when the final out was recorded.
Redshirt-junior Jack Perkins (2-1) fired six innings for the second straight start and allowed just the two runs in the loss. He struck out six, walked two and allowed just four hits in the game. The only base runners to reach third base were the two that eventually scored for the Trojans. Freshman Grant Holderfield tossed the final two innings scoreless and struck out one batter.
At the plate, redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen and freshman Josh Pyne each collected two hits, while freshman Brock Tibbitts walked three times in the game. Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis walked to get the ninth-inning rally started and pinch runner Sam Murrison scored the lone run for IU on Pyne's RBI single.
For Troy, starting pitcher Garrett Gainous threw six shutout innings and allowed two hits with three walks. He struck out nine and faced just two batters over the minimum. Clay Stearns and Easton Kirk drove in one RBI apiece, with Krik and William Sullivan each posting two hits.
