ON THE SIDELINES
IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks) back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points.
Illini Coach Brad Underwood is in his fifth year in Champaign.
B1G TIME COMEBACK
IU trailed 60-43 with 12:55 left in the second half and outscored the Wolverines 31-9 the rest of the way to secure the win. The 17-point deficit erased in postseason play matched the Hoosiers effort in the 2002 NCAA South Regional semifinal against Duke. It was the fifth comeback of at least nine for IU at Gainbridge Fieldhouse since 2015. IU trailed Notre Dame in 2015 (16), in 2017 (14) and this season (9). The Hoosiers also trailed Butler by nine in 2020.
DEFENSE LEADS THE HOOSIERS
The Hoosiers are the top-rated defensive team in the Big Ten according to KenPom (19th nationally). IU is first in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (39.0%) and first in conference games only (41.3%). They lead the league in defensive rebounds (27.5) and are second in blocked shots (510).
ALL-AMERICAN TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS
Junior/sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 17.6 points (6th in B1G), 8.2 rebounds (5th), shooting 57.8% from the floor (3rd) and contributing 76 blocked shots (T-1st).
He has had nine double-doubles this season and 31 in his career with IU posting a 23-8 record in those games. He notched four straight double-doubles for the first time in his career after he had 23 points and 12 boards at Nebraska on Jan. 17.
Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,471 points as a Hoosier, rating 18th all-time in IU lore.
He was named second-team All-Big Ten by the coaches, media and AP this season and was a member of the league's All-Defensive team. He was a third-team choice his freshman season and a first (media) and second-team pick (coaches) a season ago.
THOMPSON MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
Redshirt Sr./Jr. Race Thompson has averaged 12.3 points in Big Ten play. He ranks ninth in the Big Ten in rebounding (7.6). He is third on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg), blocks (22) and second in FG percentage (55.3%). He and Big Ten Player of the Year Johnny Davis lead the Big Ten in most games recording at least eight points and six rebounds with 17 (credit Zach Osterman, Indy Star). Thompson was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media and was IU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.
X MARKS THE SPOT
Sr./Jr. Xavier Johnson has averaged 18.7 points and 6.7 assists in his last six outings. He has shot 50.0% from long range and made 32 of his last 36 free throws.
He had back-to-back 24-point games against Maryland and at Minnesota and was nearly perfect against the Terps when he made 7-of-7 field goals, 3-of-3 from long distance and made 7-of-8 free throws. He also added six assists.
At Purdue, Johnson led IU with 19 points and a career-high 12 assists, the second most by a Hoosier since the 1996-97 season. He had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Michigan. Johnson was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media.
