No. 14 IUSD Ready for NCAA Women’s Championships
3/15/2022 1:05:00 PM | Women's Swimming and Diving
ATLANTA – No. 14 Indiana will compete in the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday through Saturday (March 16-19) inside McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech).
The competition kicks off Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET with the finals of the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay. The entirety of the event will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Eleven athletes, eight swimmers and three divers, from IU are set to appear as individuals in the four-day event. Indiana will also participate in all five relays.
IU diving secured a total of eight bids from its three athletes. Senior Kristen Hayden and sophomore and reigning NCAA Platform Champion Tarrin Gilliland earned spots in all three events, and sophomore Anne Fowler will feature in each of the two springboard contests.
"We're looking forward to getting started here at the NCAA Championships," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "The divers are in good form, the facility is fantastic and we can't wait to start the 1-meter on Thursday."
Including the five relays, IU has swimmers in 15 events. Freshman and Big Ten 200 Breaststroke Champion Brearna Crawford is slated to race the 200 breast, the 100 breast and 200 IM. 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Anna Peplowski will swim the 200 Freestyle and the 100 and 200 Backstroke events.
"We're particularly excited about this NCAA Championships for a couple of reasons," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "The 1996 Olympic pool is really fast. I love this pool, I think it's a great setup, and we have had a lot of great meets here, so there's a positive energy."
"I also think the swimmers we brought are in a lot better place, physically, than they were going into [the Big Ten Championships]. I'm optimistic that we can swim better than we did at Big Tens, and we have a goal as a team to try to exceed where we're seeded. If we can do that, that's having a good meet, and we'll have our heads held high from getting the most out of our group."

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
Indiana is amidst its most successful NCAA Championships run in program history, finishing inside the top-15 in 13 straight seasons.
The Hoosiers have totaled 11 individual titles over the last seven championships, the most prolific stretch authored by a Big Ten team in league history. IU is also the first team in conference history to win an individual title in seven consecutive seasons.
A year ago, sophomore Tarrin Gilliland won the NCAA Platform Championship in her freshman season with a mark of 338.40, making her the third Hoosier woman to win the event at the national meet.
2022 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
IU finished third with 1,100 points to secure its 16th straight top-three team placement in the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Hoosiers tallied 10 medals in the event, with Gilliland (Platform) and Crawford (200 Breaststroke) becoming Big Ten Champions.
Gilliland and Crawford earned first team All-Big Ten honors, followed by six teammates on the second team list: freshmen Anna Peplowski and Dominika Kossakowska, sophomore Ella Ristic and seniors Noelle Peplowski, Mackenzie Looze and Kristen Hayden. The younger Peplowski was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after winning three silver medals and earning the most points of any freshman in the conference.
