No. 14 IUSD Moves Into Top 15 After Two Days
3/17/2022 9:25:00 PM | Women's Swimming and Diving
ATLANTA – The No. 14-ranked Indiana women's swimming and diving team used four individual finalists to move into the top 15 of the team leaderboard Thursday (March 17) at the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships inside McAuley Aquatic Center.
Through six events, Indiana sits tied for 14th with Wisconsin at 34 points apiece.
The highlight of IU's day two came in the 1-meter dive. Indiana had the most All-Americans of any program, qualifying three student-athletes for championship and consolation finals. Sophomore Tarrin Gilliland competed in the A final, where she placed eighth. Gilliland has tallied four All-America honors in as many tries in her collegiate career with two diving events remaining in the 2022 championships.
In the consolation final, senior Kristen Hayden placed 11th (312.95) to earn her fifth-career All-America nod and first in the 1M, while sophomore Anne Fowler took 12th to gain her third-career All-America honor and second in the event.
"It was great to see Tarrin get into that A Final tonight for her best national finish on 1-meter," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "Kristen and Anne had to dig deep to score for the team today.
"It was nice to see the team move up in the standings at the end of the day. They all responded well when adversity came today. I am excited to see how we respond when it comes again tomorrow."
"I'm proud of how we fought for every last point today," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "Mackenzie [Looze] is an All-American in the 200 IM for the first time, making it in the B final. We came very close to scoring our 200 free relay. It's just going to be important that we scratch and claw for every point at this meet to finish as high as possible in the national rankings, but I'm proud of our resilience and we are looking forward to day three."
Mackenzie Looze set a personal best 1:55.42 in the 200 IM prelim Thursday morning and almost matched it in the evening second, going 1:55.43 in the consolation final. The senior earned her fourth-career All-America honor, second this week, and first in the 200 IM.
Looze was later the second leg of IU's 200 Freestyle Relay in which the Hoosiers finished 20th, two spots above their seeding. Indiana concluded the evening with a 1:28.78 in the 200 free relay, .10 seconds faster than its seed. As the anchor leg, sophomore Elizabeth Broshears swam the fastest split for the Hoosiers and touched the wall in 21.90.
