Ellis hits 10th home run of the season as part of a three-hit game

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Ten unanswered runs were not enough, as the Indiana baseball program dropped a 12-10 decision on Saturday (March 19) to Xavier at Bart Kaufman Field.

Xavier (7-12) scored the first 12 runs of the game with one in the first, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and six in the sixth inning. Indiana (7-11) answered with 10 unanswered thanks to five in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth inning, before the Musketeers recorded the final outs.

Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis hit his 10th home run of the season as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. Ellis was on base four times, drawing a walk, as well. Freshman Carter Mathison reached base three times with a pair of hits and one walk in the contest. He plated two RBIs and scored one run.

Senior Braydon Tucker (0-2) made the start and struck out seven over four innings of work. He allowed four runs on six hits and walked only one batter. Junior Nathan Stahl struck out four of the eight batters he faced in two innings of relief work to help IU narrow the gap.

For Xavier, Trevor Olson (1-2) picked up the win with five scoreless innings in the start. He allowed one hit, walked three and struck out six. Garrett Schultz drove in four RBIs, Jack Housinger plated three and Jerry Huntzinger collected two RBIs.

The first three batters of the inning reached base and Lane Flamm's sacrifice fly scored the first run of the inning. Garrett Schultz then doubled down the right field line to score two more.

Top Fifth
Jerry Huntzinger homered to left field and Jack Housinger walked to start the inning. Tyler DeMartino followed with a two-out double to score Housinger from second.

Top Sixth
After the first out of the inning was recorded, Eddie Rivero doubled, and Jared Cushing singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Huntzinger's base hit scored the first run of the inning, before Housinger homered to plate three runs. A walk was followed by an out and a pair of singles to load the bases. Schultz singled up the middle to plate the final two runs of the inning.

Bottom Sixth
Phillip Glasser singled and came around to score on a Bobby Whalen triple. Matthew Ellis followed with an RBI single before the first out was recorded. An error and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, before Kip Fougerousse singled to drive in a pair of runs. An error by the Xavier second baseman allowed the final run of the inning to score.

Bottom Seventh
Ellis singled and Brock Tibbitts walked to put two runners on with one out. Josh Pyne singled through the left side to score the first run of the inning and Carter Mathison doubled to right field to score two more.

With two outs, Whalen was hit by a pitch and Ellis hit a home run to right field.
