
Gilliland Eyes Platform Title Defense

ATLANTA – Reigning NCAA Platform Champion Tarrin Gilliland will try for her second straight national title in the event Saturday (March 19) night at the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships inside McAuley Aquatic Center.
Gilliland, a sophomore, advances to her third championship final this week after placing second among qualifiers during the preliminary session Saturday morning with a score of 350.20, just 1.30 points behind the top qualifier. A year ago, Gilliland scored 338.40 to win gold at the national meet and this year posted a career-best 382.80 to capture her first Big Ten title in the event.
Last night, Gilliland finished third in the 3-meter dive behind teammate and runner-up Kristen Hayden. Hayden, a senior, placed 14th in the Platform prelim to earn a place in the consolation final and her third All-America honor of the meet.
In total, three IU divers have earned seven total All-America nods with four of those being first team honors.
Across the deck, senior Mackenzie Looze swam a career-best 2:08.14 to grab a spot in the 200 Breaststroke consolation final. Looze had earned three All-America finishes this week to bring her career total to five.
In the final night of the 2022 women's championships, Indiana will also compete in the 1,650 Freestyle and 400 Freestyle Relay. Freshmen Ching Hwee Gan and Mariah Denigan are IU's representatives in the mile race, each boasting top-20 seeds.
