ATLANTA – From the platform to the podium, Indiana sophomore diver Tarrin Gilliland is the NCAA National Champion in the Platform dive for the second straight year.
Gilliland scored 372.95 on her five dives, earning north of 70 points on four of those attempts. She put an exclamation mark on her performance with back-to-back scores of 80 for her final two dives. Gilliland finished 27 points higher than the runner-up.
"There [were] a lot of nerves going into it," Gilliland told ESPN after her performance. "I know last year I was really injured and just trying to get off the 10-meter, but it was so much fun to be happy and healthy and [to] dive. I couldn't do it without God and my teammates and my coach."
The Midland, Texas, native is the first Indiana diver to win multiple Platform national titles and collected the program's fourth championship in the event and third since 2015.
Through two seasons, Gilliland has earned All-America honors in each of the maximum six events at the national meet. During this year's meet, she was one of two divers to qualify for all three championship finals.
The championship put a bow on a fantastic meet and season for Indiana diving. The Hoosiers collected seven All-America nods at this week's meet and three Big Ten medals in February, including Gilliland's gold in the Platform and bronze in the 3-meter dive.
"What a great finish to the championships for Indiana swimming and diving," IU diving head coach Drew Johansen said. "Tarrin was spectacular tonight. She ran into a little adversity on that second round, and then came back like a champion. On that fifth round, when the opportunity came, she nailed it for nines, and it was game over. It was a lot of fun."
Gilliland also earned 3-meter bronze at the national meet, finishing right behind senior IU teammate Kristen Hayden who placed second on Friday night. Gilliland started her week with an eighth-place finish in the 1M on Wednesday.
With Gilliland's gold, Indiana women's swimming and diving has had an individual champion in a Big Ten record eight straight seasons. Lilly King claimed eight breaststroke titles from 2016-19, Jessica Parratto won the Platform in 2015, and Brooklyn Snodgrass won the 200 Backstroke in 2014.
