BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following an emphatic finish at the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, Indiana head diving coach Drew Johansen and sophomore diver Tarrin Gilliland were honored for their excellence throughout the 2021-22 season by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America on Tuesday (March 22).
Johansen was named the CSCAA Women's Division I Diving Coach of the Year, while Gilliland was picked as the Women's Division I Diver of the Year.
CSCAA announced its women's postseason awards along with its full list of All-Americans, awarded to student-athletes that made finals at the NCAA Championships. Indiana boasts the third-most All-Americans of any program in the country, with 12 different student-athletes earning at least one honor. Only NCAA Champion Virginia and Texas, each with 14, had more.
Johansen led the IU women's divers to a combined seven All-America honors, three medals and 84 points at the national meet. In February, the Hoosier ladies won three medals at the Big Ten Championships.
It's Johansen's second CSCAA coach of the year selection and first on the women's side. In 2018, Johansen was named the men's coach of the year after his group put up an NCAA-best 98 points in IU's third-place team finish at the national championships.
Gilliland is Indiana's second athlete to win the diver of the year award after Christina Loukas earned the selection in 2009. The sophomore finished the season with her second straight NCAA Platform National Championship, becoming just the second athlete ever to win back-to-back platform titles as a freshman and sophomore, joining Stanford's Eileen Richetelli (1992-93).
Gilliland's platform gold was her second medal of the national meet. The night before, she finished third behind teammate, senior and runner-up Kristen Hayden on the 3-meter springboard. She was also a 3M bronze medalist at the conference meet.
With Gilliland's gold, Indiana women's swimming and diving has had an individual champion in a Big Ten record eight straight seasons. Lilly King claimed eight breaststroke titles from 2016-19, Jessica Parratto won the Platform in 2015, and Brooklyn Snodgrass won the 200 Backstroke in 2014.
