Hoosiers score five times with two outs in the ninth to rally for the midweek win
With just one hit entering the ninth inning, junior Hunter Jessee, freshman Carter Mathison and graduate student Tyler Doanes provided the three biggest hits of the season for Indiana (13-18) to this point. Jessee drove in one RBI with a two-out single and Mathison followed it with a full-count three-run home run to tie the game. Doanes – on his birthday – hit the go-ahead home run to left-center field three pitches later.
Indiana State (19-9) opened the scoring three runs in the second inning and added solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings to make it a 5-1 game. The Hoosiers scored one in the third inning, before the five-run ninth capped the comeback.
Doanes led the offense with a 1-for-2 day at the plate, two walks and two runs scored. Freshman Brock Tibbitts provided the first hit of the game, a double in the fourth inning, while Mathison provided three of the six RBIs in the game. Senior Peter Serruto plated the first run with an RBI groundout.
Junior John-Biagio Modugno (ND) got the start for IU and allowed three runs on five hits over his two innings of work in the no decision. The right-hander struck out three before handing the ball to junior Ty Bothwell for the next four innings. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out three.
Freshman Ryan Kraft (2-1) earned his second victory of the season with 1 1/3 innings of one-run work and senior Braydon Tucker (3) earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Randall Diaz led all players with three hits and added two hits and two RBIs, and Aaron Beck hit a home run as part of a two-hit game. Jordan Schaffer doubled, drove in one RBI and walked twice in the contest. On the mound, Joey Hurth (4-2) took the loss with five runs allowed on three hits. He walked two and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings of work.
