BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following its second competition of the 2022 season, 20th-ranked Indiana rowing received its first Big Ten Boat of the Week honor as announced by the conference office on Tuesday (April 12).
Indiana's First Varsity 8 earned the honor after collecting two of IU's six wins on Saturday (April 9) at the OSU Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The crew featured Katherine Nelson as the coxswain, followed by Sophie McCartin, Piper Maaka, Laura Feinson, Phoebe Inall, Ella Cunningham, Niamh Monk, Catherine Ryan and Ruby Leverington.
During the morning session, IU's 1V8 finished in 6:37.2, six seconds better than Oklahoma (6:43.5) and 11 seconds in front of conference foe Michigan State (6:48.9). That afternoon, IU outpaced the Spartans in a duel, going 6:42.0 to the opponent's 6:51.0.
In each race, Indiana's top boat was able to build an early lead and stave off its competitors the rest of the way. Junior Piper Maaka said the crew's success comes from its chemistry.
"Our Varsity 8 had an instant connection in the boat this year, and we hope to use this to our advantage as much as possible," Maaka said after the regatta Saturday. "We know that if we give 100 percent focus and effort, the rest will fall into place."
Maaka and the Hoosiers are back in action this weekend at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Florida. The two-day event will take place Friday and Saturday (April 15-16) and feature some of the top competition in the country.
