
Indiana Track & Field Set for Road Trip to Louisville

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Track & Field heads down I-65 to Louisville, Ky. this weekend to compete in in the Louisville Invitational. The meet is slated to begin on Friday, April 15 at 1 p.m. and end on Saturday, April 16. Saturday's portion of the meet is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.

Last Time Out: Tennessee Relays
The Hoosiers were last in action at Tennessee Relays where IU saw bright spots despite another weekend full of rainy weather. Indiana won four relays, the women's 4x800m, 4x1500m relay, along with the men's 4x400m and sprint medley relay. The women's 4x1500m relay comprised of Mikaela Ramirez, Jenna Barker, Hannah Stoffel, and Sarah Schmitt combined for a time of 18:14.52 which was a meet and facility record. The Hoosiers saw 18 top-five finishes on Friday night that included victories from Sarah Schmitt in the 1500m and Elizabeth Stanhope in the open 800m. On Saturday, IU picked up another seven top-five finishes.
Last Time Out: Pacesetter
The Throws group traveled to Indiana State for the Pacesetter Sports Invitational on Saturday, April 9. Maddy Pollard highlighted the field by winning the shot put with a mark of 16.82m. Jayden Ulrich took the runner up spot as she heaved a put of 15.19m.
Mark It Up
On the third weekend of outdoor competition, Kenny Benton added his name to another top-10 all-time list. With his time of 10.37 in the 100m at Tennessee Relays he is now tied for 10th in IU History. Looking at the outdoor season, Hoosier athletes have seen seven marks make their way into IU History.
Freshmen Throws Off to Hot Start
Freshman Sean Mockler has made an immediate impact as he holds the third best mark in the hammer throw. Mockler Heaved a throw of 67.47m (221' 4") at Florida Relays. Another freshman who has made an immediate impact is Jayden Ulrich. Ulrich saw a mark of 52.50m (172' 5") in the discus at Florida Relays to propel her into third all-time.
Looking at East Prelims
On May 25-28 Indiana will play host to the 2022 East Preliminary Round. To qualify for the prelims, an individual must be in the top-48 of their respective events. On the relay side, a quartet must be in the top-32 of their relay event.
14 Hoosiers are among the top-48 while another six have entered the top-10 of their respective events. Ben Veatch is No. 2 in the 5000m while Nathan Stone and Ryan Lipe have clearance that put them sixth and tied for 10th, respectively. Sean Mockler rounds out the men as he is 10th in the hammer. On the women's side, Bailey Hertenstein leads the way with the third spot in the 1500m and fifth in the 5000m. Maddy Pollard propelled to seventh in the shot put after a successful weekend at Indiana State.
Once a Hoosier, Always a Hoosier
On April 5, Head Coach Ron Helmer announced his plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Helmer's retirement will bring an end to a coaching career that has spanned more than 50 years and is littered with national champions, Olympic gold medalists, and enormous team accomplishments. His Hoosier student-athletes placed in the top three in individual events at NCAA Championships 22 times, in the top five 40 times, and captured 221 All-America honors.
