
Early Lead Slips at Miami (Ohio)

OXFORD, Ohio – After taking an early lead, the Indiana baseball program fell behind and couldn't catch up in a 9-7 loss at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday (April 19) evening at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
Indiana (13-22) jumped on the board first with three runs in the first, before Miami (Ohio) (15-21) put up seven runs in the bottom of the inning. IU got two back in the third, before MU answered with two in the fourth. A single Hoosier run in the fifth and eighth pulled the game closer, before the RedHawks got the final three outs.
Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis led a trio of Hoosiers with multi-hit games. He went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs. Freshmen Carter Mathison and Brock Tibbitts each drove in two RBIs in the game, while redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen and senior Phillip Glasser each chipped in two-hit games.
Freshman Josh Pyne moved his reached base streak to 25 games with a walk and hit-by-pitch in the game and scored two runs. The reached base streak is now the fifth longest streak since at least 2005 with Matt Lloyd (2019).
On the mound, junior John-Biagio Modugno (0-3) took the loss with one inning of work and seven runs allowed on seven hits. Redshirt-junior Ty Bothwell allowed two runs on one hit over four innings with seven strikeouts and redshirt-sophomore Jack Walker struck out three in three scoreless innings to close out the game.
For Miami (Ohio), Benji Brokemondwent 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Brian Zapp and David Novak each added two RBIs. Zach MacDonald scored two runs, drove in one RBI and was on base three times in the game. Starting pitcher Michael Spinozzi (1-2) picked up the win with four innings of work and five runs – three earned – allowed.
