
Rally Comes Up Short Against Northwestern

Northwestern (10-12, 1-1 B1G) struck for three runs in the fourth inning, three in the seventh and one in the ninth to account for the Wildcats' scoring. Indiana (11-14, 1-1 B1G) mounted a furious rally in the ninth inning with six runs on three hits against three NU pitchers.
Freshman Josh Pyne moved his hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. He doubled twice in the game for his second career game with two extra base hits (Kentucky, 3/15/22), added one walk and one run scored. Freshman Carter Mathison posted a career-high three hits in the game and drove in two RBIs.
Junior Hunter Jessee and freshman Brock Tibbitts each drove in RBIs, while redshirt-junior Tucker Schank had a pinch-hit two-RBI single in the ninth inning.
Senior Bradley Brehmer (3-2) allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings in the loss. He allowed seven hits and struck out eight in the contest. Redshirt-junior Ty Bothwell fired two innings of scoreless relief, while redshirt-sophomore Brian Gaffney made his collegiate debut and returned the only batter he faced.
For Northwestern, starting pitcher Michael Farinelli earned the victory with 7 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out five, allowed five hits and walked one. Ethan O'Donnell was 4-for-6 on the day with two RBIs to pace the offense. Three other Wildcats posted multi-hit games, with Alex Calarco, Vincent Bianchina and Tony Livermore each posted two hits.

Jay Beshears doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning and after a single by Anthony Calarco, Bianchina doubled to collect an RBI. Calarco crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Andrew Pinkston added an RBI on a ground out.

Top Ninth
Bianchina was hit by a pitch followed by a pair of outs. With two outs, Livermore hit a single and a wild pitch eventually allowed Bianchina to score.

Bottom Ninth
Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out and Brock Tibbitts walked to push the first run across. Hunter Jessee lined an RBI single between first and second and Carter Mathison roped a two-RBI ground-rule double to left field. Tucker Schank dropped a two-RBI single into right center to make it a one-run game before the final two outs were recorded via strikeout.
