Doanes drives in four, Ellis hits 13th home run as part of a three-RBI night
INDIANAPOLIS –Two pitchers combined to scatter five hits and the offense produced at least nine runs for the 11th time in 2022 as the Indiana baseball program captured a 9-1 victory over Butler on Tuesday (March 26) evening at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians.
Indiana (17-23) opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning, added one in the fifth and one in the sixth inning, and capped the scoring a four-run seventh. Butler (18-23-1) scored their lone run in the ninth inning to break up the shutout.
Graduate student Tyler Doanes had his best night at the plate as a Hoosier and his most productive in terms of runs batted in in nearly four years. He drove in four RBIs on the night to tie a career high he set on April 29, 2018, against Texas while playing at West Virginia. On Tuesday, Doanes was 2-for-3 with one double and one triple. He added one run score and one sacrifice fly to his four-RBI stat line.
Junior Hunter Jessee led the way with a 4-for-4 night at the plate. He added one walk and one run scored, which came on a straight steal of home. Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis posted a three-hit game with three RBIs. The left-handed hitter launched a 433-foot home run – his 13th of the season – for his ninth home run over 400 feet this season. Sophomore Samuel Murrison had the other RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The duo of senior Braydon Tucker and redshirt-junior Ty Bothwell combined to allow just one run on five hits over nine innings. Tucker got the start and threw four shutout innings with seven strikeouts, while Bothwell (1-1) collected the win with five innings of work and one run allowed on two hits. He walked two and struck out eight Bulldog batters.
For Butler, Kollyn All hit a solo home run as part of a 2-for-2 day at the plate. All replaced Garrett Gray in the sixth inning, as Gray was 2-for-2 on the night, as the eighth spot in the order delivered four of the Bulldogs five hits.
