Hoosiers Host Final Home Weekend, Senior Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team will host Illinois this weekend in their final home Big Ten series.

Illinois leads the all-time series 22-10. Last season the teams split the four game series 2-2 in Champaign, Ill.
Scouting the Opponent
Illinois comes in with a 30-16 overall record and 12-4 mark in Big Ten Play. The Fighting Illini have swept Big Ten series against Wisconsin and Rutgers. They split a doubleheader against Northwestern last week. Last time out they won two out of three against Iowa. Illinois ranks second in the Big Ten in hitting with a batting average of .317. Senior Avrey Steiner is hitting .365 for Illinois this season. Illinois ranks fourth in the Big Ten in pitching with a team era of 2.65. Sydney Sickels with 110.1 inning pitched and a 2.22 era and Tori McQueen with 91.1 innings and a 2.61 era have been their most used pitchers.
Last Time Out
The Hoosiers swept a doubleheader against Purdue on Tuesday April 26. In the two games combined the Hoosiers hit four home runs and stole 11 bases. Brooke Benson went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run. Also hitting home runs were Aaliyah Andrews, Lindsey Warick and Juvia Davis.
The Long Ball
The Hoosiers have already surpassed their home run total from a season ago. Indiana has 53 home runs through 42 games this season. Last year the Hoosiers tallied 28 home runs in 44 games. Against Purdue the Hoosiers broke their program record for home runs in a season, which was previously set in 2015 with 51.
Attacking the Next 60 Feet
The Hoosiers rank 8th among NCAA DI softball teams in stolen bases at 2.38 per game. Tatum Hayes ranks second in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 25. The Hoosiers have stolen 100 bases this season compared to 29 from their opponents. Lindsey Warick has thrown out 11 runners trying to steal bases this season, which ranks leads the Big Ten.
2 Out Hitting
Indiana has scored 77 runs this season with two out, including 12 games in which they have scored three or more runs with two outs. Cora Bassett is hitting .520 on the season with two outs.
Big Improvements
Brittany Ford and Brooke Benson have shown great improvement from last season to this season.

Stanton Earns 700th Career Victory
With the Hoosiers 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State on March 19 IU head coach Shonda Stanton earned her 700th career victory. Stanton is in her 24th year as a head coach. Before arriving in Bloomington, she coached at Marshall for 18 seasons and is the winningest coach in Marshall history with 560 wins.
Copeland Freshman of the Week X3
On Monday April 4 Brianna Copeland earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor. Copeland provided fireworks in the Hoosiers 14-11 win over Kent State on March 30. Copeland hit three home runs to become the Hoosiers first freshman to ever hit three home runs in a game and just the third ever player to accomplish the feat. Copeland lifted the Hoosiers to victory with a walk-off three-run home run in the ninth inning of the game. Copeland is hitting .400 on the season with eight home runs.
