WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An early deficit could not be overcome, as the Indiana baseball program dropped a 17-0 decision at Purdue in the series opener at Alexander Field on Saturday (April 9) afternoon.
Purdue (20-6, 2-3 B1G) opened the scoring with a four-run first inning and added a run in the fourth to stake to the early lead. The Boilermakers tacked on one run in the sixth, one in the seventh and 10 in the eighth to account for the scoring. Indiana (11-17, 1-3 B1G) was held off the scoreboard for just the third time on the season.

Graduate student Tyler Doanes collected the other IU hit in the game for Indiana. Freshman Carter Mathison reached base twice in the game with a pair of walks and stole one base.
After the rocky first inning, redshirt-junior Jack Perkins (2-2) gave IU six innings of work and allowed six runs on seven hits. He struck out three, walked four and hit two batters in the loss.
For Purdue, Jackson Smeltz (5-0) struck out 13 batters in eight innings of scoreless work on the mound to earn the victory.
