Head Coach Steve Peterson
On the team's performance…
"Our crews did a good job, although I think the coaches were dealing with finding some more speed here and there. As far as trying to execute race plans and the way that we want to row, the style we need to row, I think we can do a better job.
I think they raced hard, and the results were good, but I think we can go faster. Looking at the Big Ten Invitational next weekend, we're going to have to bring our A game."
On the weather conditions…
"The weather for the rowers was not bad, but we were going through moments of sun, then rain, then sleet, and so on, so it was kind of a crazy day. But it didn't affect the racing. I think it was a fair situation."
Junior Piper Maaka
On gaining early leads in 1V8 victories…
"Thankfully, we are a grounded crew in our starts, and we think that gave us the sharp and direct strokes we needed to push ahead early. Being able to have a lead from the very start allowed us an opportunity to test ourselves and see how much open water we could create between our boats. Having a head start can be challenging as you keep trying to go faster, but we were able to ignore that and continue to test our speed without crews beside us.
On preparing for the Big Ten Invitational…
"We know that we can go fast and lead, but we also know that in order to do that we need to row our own race. This next week we will continue to focus on staying sharp, effective and excited. Our Varsity 8 had an instant connection in the boat this year, and we hope to use this to our advantage as much as possible. We know that if we give 100 percent focus and effort, the rest will fall into place."
