Eight-Run Fifth Propels Baseball to Series Win Over Illinois
5/1/2022 6:49:00 PM | Baseball
Sharp picks up second win of the weekend with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief
Illinois (23-18, 12-6 B1G) struck first with two runs in the first inning, before Indiana (20-24, 6-9 B1G) plated three in the bottom of the inning. The Fighting Illini grabbed the momentum back with a five-run third, before the Hoosiers' eight-run fifth capped the scoring.
The eight-run inning was the highest scoring inning since a nine-run fifth inning for IU against Minnesota on April 15, 2017.
Freshman Carter Mathison continued to flash his power at the plate with his first career multi-home run game. Hit two home runs push his total to 13 on the year, the most among Big Ten freshmen and tied for No. 2 among rookies in the NCAA. He was 2-for-4 on the afternoon with two runs scored and five RBIs.
After his two-home run game, the left-handed hitter is now within one of Alex Dickerson's freshman home run record (14; 2009). His first inning home run moved his hitting streak to five games and his reached base streak to 11 games.
Freshman Evan Goforth went 2-for-4 with one run scored and collected a pair of hits in the eight-run fifth inning. It is the first time since 2004 that a Hoosier collected multiple hits in an inning. Prior to Goforth's two singles versus the Illini, the last IU hitter to post multiple hits in an inning was Reggie Watson in the third inning versus Iowa on April 19, 2004.
Sharp (2-6) picked up the win as the second reliever out of the bullpen, as the redshirt-sophomore threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just four hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter to earn his second win of the weekend. Senior Braydon Tucker got the start and allowed six runs on five hits but did not factor into the decision.
Jacob Campbell hit a home run for the third straight day for Illinois and produced three RBIs. Kellen Sarver drove in two RBIs and four Fighting Illini hitters produced multi-hit games. Jack Wenninger took the loss with four runs allowed on three hits in one-third of an inning of relief.
